In a major update for Minecraft modding, the popular open source platform Modrinth has been acquired by Spark Universe, the studio known for creating the Essential mod. The deal, which closed in February 2026, was publicly announced on June 15, 2026. Founder Jai Agrawal shared the news on the official Modrinth blog, outlining a future focused on stability and growth while keeping the platform true to its community roots.

Modrinth launched in 2020 as an alternative to other mod repositories. It quickly grew into a go to destination for thousands of mods, resource packs, shaders, and modpacks. Millions of players and creators rely on it daily for discovery, downloads, and collaboration.

Why the Acquisition Happened

Jai Agrawal started Modrinth as a teenager. Over the years it scaled into a platform used by tens of millions. As he focused on college, daily oversight became challenging. He hired Josh to lead the team, yet issues like review backlogs, website stability problems, and technical debt persisted due to limited resources.

After meeting Spark Universe founders Raf and Flo in 2023, Jai saw alignment in values and a shared passion for Minecraft. He chose them as the new stewards to give Modrinth the support it needed to move forward.

What Stays the Same

Officials have been clear on several key points that will not change:

  • Modrinth remains fully open source. The code stays public and available for contributions.
  • The platform operates as an independent entity with its own team.
  • There is no merger with Essential. The two projects have separate focuses and teams.
  • Essential will not be automatically installed or given special treatment in searches or recommendations.
  • The existing Modrinth team, led by Josh, continues to run day to day operations.
  • Jai will still contribute behind the scenes on improvements and team discussions.

These assurances aim to keep Modrinth creator focused and transparent.

What Changes and Improves

Spark Universe brings additional resources and a larger team of over 50 Minecraft focused professionals. Expected benefits include:

  • Expanded staff for content review, support, and engineering to reduce wait times and fix bugs faster.
  • Transition of team members from contractor roles to full employment with benefits.
  • Greater investment in platform stability and infrastructure.
  • Potential growth in Modrinth Hosting services.

The goal is to address growing pains from rapid expansion without altering the core mission or direction. Raf and Flo will support rather than take over leadership.

Official Statements

Jai Agrawal emphasized trust must be earned through actions rather than assumed. He wrote that Spark Universe understands the community because they have lived the Minecraft creation experience for years.

He added thanks to every creator, player, contributor, translator, and community member who helped build Modrinth into what it is today. The platform has always been and will remain a community project.

A live question and answer session was held shortly after the announcement to address community questions directly.

Looking Ahead

Community reactions have been mixed. Some users express caution given Essential Mod’s history with features like in game cosmetics and its installer system. Others see potential for positive development if Spark delivers on promises of independence and improvement.

Modrinth’s core values of openness and creator support appear secure. With new backing, the platform is positioned to resolve longstanding issues and continue serving the Minecraft community effectively.

The full announcement and ongoing updates are available on the official Modrinth news page. Players and creators are encouraged to stay engaged through the Modrinth Discord for the latest developments.
