Since the spear got announced, it's been a hot topic among Minecraft players. Thanks to its fast pokes and strong charged strikes, it's great for handling dangerous mobs without getting too close. You can make the spear even stronger by adding some of the top enchantments in the game. Here's a ranked list of the best ones to prepare for the Mounts of Mayhem update.

After trying out every enchantment that works on the spear, we've put together this list, starting from the most effective and going down to the least useful ones that still have their place. So, let's dive into the top spear enchantments in Minecraft.

1. Lunge

The top spot goes to Lunge, the spear-exclusive enchantment arriving with the Mounts of Mayhem update. It makes your jab attacks launch you forward in the direction you're aiming.

The main downside is that each jab drains your hunger bar, reducing hunger points and food saturation. In a recent update, this consumption was adjusted to scale with attack frequency, making it more demanding during rapid combat sequences for better balance. Since Mending can't be used with it anymore, pair it with Unbreaking to maintain the spear's condition over extended use.

2. Sharpness

Among the top-tier choices, Sharpness ramps up the spear's damage across the board. Unlike more specialized ones, it works against every mob.

You can team it with Fire Aspect for extra burn effects, but it won't pair with Bane of Arthropods or Smite—and given its broad benefits, you probably won't miss those anyway.

3. Fire Aspect

Fire Aspect is another solid option for the spear—it sets targets on fire when you attack, causing ongoing burn damage.

When combined with enchantments that ramp up base damage, it lets you drop foes in just a few hits.

4. Unbreaking

Unbreaking stands out as one of the top enchantments for spears because it greatly extends the lifespan of tools and weapons. At level 3, it boosts durability by 300%.

If you're going for that unique lunging ability, Unbreaking is essential to keep your spear going strong.

5. Smite

Smite boosts damage against undead mobs with each strike, covering things like Zombies, Zombie Villagers, Skeletons, Withers, Wither Skeletons, and Zombified Piglins.

While it's targeted at specific enemy types, it's a smarter pick than Bane of Arthropods. That said, it can't be combined with Sharpness.

6. Looting

Putting Looting on your spear means enemies drop more items when you take them out. It's one of the most practical enchantments since it cuts down on the need to hunt multiple mobs for resources.

For instance, you can get extra blaze rods from fewer Blazes, more skulls from Wither Skeletons, or additional Ender Pearls from Endermen.

7. Knockback

This enchantment lets your spear shove enemies back a bit. The spear already has built-in knockback on charged attacks.

But with Knockback added, you get pushback on quick jabs too, and the distance increases on charged ones. Note that it won't affect massive mobs like Iron Golems, Squids, or the Warden.

8. Mending

Mending is a hard-to-find enchantment that's solid for most tools and weapons, but it falls short for the spear. If you're aiming to give your spear standout features, this isn't the way to go.

As of Minecraft Snapshot 25w42a, it's now incompatible with Lunge, forcing you to pick one or the other. If you stick with Mending, it lets the spear recover durability from each kill.

It's handy in long fights or when you can't repair the weapon for a while.

9. Bane of Arthropods

With this enchantment on your spear, it hits arthropod mobs harder—like bees, spiders, cave spiders, endermites, and silverfish. Its use is pretty narrow, though, since everything else takes regular damage.

It doesn't work alongside Smite or Sharpness, which are stronger choices for taking on tougher enemies.

10. Curse of Vanishing and Curse of Binding

These two curses sit at the bottom of our ranking. They're mainly handy in PvP scenarios and don't add much value in solo play.

The Curse of Vanishing means the spear won't drop if you die, while the Curse of Binding locks it in your hand so you can't take it off. In fights, they offer no real advantage and can actually make situations more annoying.
