Rhythm game or rhythm action is a genre of music-themed action video game that challenges a player's sense of rhythm. Games in the genre typically focus on dance or the simulated performance of musical instruments and require players to press buttons in a sequence dictated on the screen.

In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the top 5 best Rhythm games to play on PC in 2022.

1. Metal: Hellsinger

Metal: Hellsinger is a rhythm first-person shooter where you fire, reload, slaughter and dodge on the beat. The original soundtrack contains some of the best metal music that you’ll ever hear, made by the very best metal musicians out there.

You have to sync your shots, quick reloads (pressing the reload button as soon as the yellow beat goes inside the reticle) and dashes to the beat of the music, and the rhythm detection reticle, which serves as a guide to help you match your actions. The game calls it “Beat Matching”. It sounds hard but it becomes pretty easy once you get the hang of it. When an enemy is severely wounded, you can perform a slaughter (on beat as the rest), which is similar to DOOM's glory kills, and you can regain some health from it.

Fast-paced combat that looks beautiful and fluid

The game has a Fury multiplier, and it moves up and down depending on your beat matching; the more in sync you are with the rhythm, the more intense the music will become, which will, in turn, increase the multiplier (from 1x to 16x maximum) as well as the score. However, going off beat or taking damage will disrupt the multiplier and decrease it.

2. Crypt of the NecroDancer

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a procedural dungeon crawler where the player and enemies move on the beats of the game's music tracks. That may sound like an eclectic mix, but it works. It works really well.

Each enemy has its own behaviors which players can anticipate and respond to after learning their movement patterns. For example, skeletons move on every second beat, whilst ghosts move on every beat, but only when the player is facing away from them. The game's complexity is emergent and comes from the combinations of enemies which make each encounter feel unique and challenging. Each of the game's four zones is populated with its own enemy types, which become more varied as the game progresses.

As you play, your character will come across many weapons and items, each with its own behaviors that lend themselves to different styles of gameplay. The properties of each item seem to be something you're expected to learn as you play, discovering that a broadsword will let you hit enemies on any of the three adjacent tiles, or that a karate gi will enable Cadence to move past traps without setting them off.

3. Spin Rhythm XD

The gameplay of SRXD is best described as fluent, fitting, and very fun. To elaborate, however, there are many aspects of the gameplay that make it shine over many other rhythm games. First of all, the originality presented by the control scheme itself is extremely refreshing, providing a relatively unique experience for those who have played a lot of rhythm games. For new players to the rhythm game genre, however, the difficulty is gradually eased and thoroughly marked, making the game a welcoming experience to new players as well.

Of course, uniqueness doesn't always equal fun, but in this instance, it surely does, and for multiple reasons. First of all, the actions of matching, tapping, flicking, and scratching all feel exceptionally synchronized and fluid with the songs themselves. Additionally, the gameplay incorporates both aim and timing to create a very balanced system.

The control is very easy to figure out.

Lastly, the various difficulties and upcoming challenge modes provide (and will provide) a good amount of replayability. That's not even mentioning the maps themselves which are mostly fun and enjoyable, if not occasionally a bit stamina-testing. Regardless, SRXD's gameplay is extremely polished.

4. Everhood

Gameplay is rather simple, with the game divided into two halves- the exploration half, where you traipse around the colorful world of the Everhood, solve simple fetch quest puzzles and engage in banter with the odd residents of this place, and the battle half, where the game transforms into a combination between a rhythm game and a bullet hell.

The neon rhythm combat is fairly unique

Enemies begin dancing to unique pieces of music, producing waves of colorful lights that you need to dodge around and over. Dodging feels snappy and strong, while the forgiving regenerating health and jumping mechanics make for an experience that is challenging, but not overbearing or obnoxious difficult (unless one cranks up the difficulty in the menu). The great presentation mentioned earlier comes into play here, with each enemy having their own unique rhythm challenge.

Everhood has simple but charming graphics.

Everhood delights in giving each fight a huge amount of personality, from syncing up huge attacks with the music, to giving many enemies completely unique particle effects, to constantly subverting your expectations as to what certain fights might be like. Even if the gameplay remains rather simple the entire way through, I was not bored for a second while playing this game through the five hours it took me to beat it, which speaks volumes for both how fun the core gameplay is, and how well the developers performed in making each fight a unique and engaging experience.

5. AudioSurf

What this game appears to be is that it converts sound files (music files such as .mp3 ones) into a linear ongoing track of some sort. You get to control a small little car-like vehicle, though the only movement you can perform is sideways. The speed of your little car-like thingy is determined by the pace of your music, which is represented by the color of the track you are riding on. I won't go into detail on the blocks and gameplay, but that's basically it.

You can put in pretty much any music file you want.

In short, this game lets you ride the music. And yes, you can ride on almost any musical file you've loaded into the game, and this is what makes this game great and worthwhile.

This is the perfect game to relax.

There is one particular game mode that I like - mono. It's basically a no-brainer where you simply hit the color blocks and avoid the grey blocks as you move forward along the track. It's a splendid mode to relax with, especially after a day of tiring work when all you want is some of your favorite music and soothing gameplay.
