Rumors about the price of Grand Theft Auto VI have been circulating online for years. Since the announcement of GTA 6 eight months ago, the discussion has gained even more attention. A game director has suggested that most games should cost more and that studios are waiting for GTA VI to set a new price trend.
A typical AAA video game now costs about £60 to £70. For example, the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is priced at £69.99 digitally for the standard edition, with higher prices for upgraded editions. The physical edition costs around £57. Many gamers are unhappy with the £70 base price, especially considering that during the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era, AAA games were about £40, released in a more complete state, and didn’t require numerous updates and years to fix.
Video games prices to increase because of GTA 6
Michael Douse, the director of publishing for Baldur’s Gate 3, mentioned on X that video game studios are waiting for Grand Theft Auto VI to set a new base price for games. Given the massive scale of GTA VI, which is expected to be the largest game ever released, many anticipate it will cost more than £70. Some social media users are even predicting a price close to £100, representing an increase of over 40%.
Michael Douse stated that almost every video game should cost more at the base level because production costs and inflation are outpacing current pricing trends. He added that many in the industry are waiting for Rockstar to raise the base price for GTA VI before other studios follow suit and do the same.
Would you be in favor of video games costing over £70 for the base price? Considering companies like Activision, EA, and Take-Two are already making substantial profits, it seems that publishers might not need to raise prices on AAA games. It could just be another way to boost profits for shareholders.
