The Story

The introduction to Dainsleif starts by opening the gate to Khaenri'ah, a nation that is indeed mysterious and radical, as it doesn’t show loyalty to any gods. As a godless nation, Khaenri'ah has flourished with technological advancements as its people are capable of creating strong machinery, including the Field Tiller. Additionally, they are also experts in chemicals.

However, their prosperity didn’t last long as the gods saw the country to be too ambitious and possibly dangerous for their own good. This is also the reason why Dainsleif warned the Traveler about the gods.

From the in-game story, we know that Dainsleif was the Twilight Sword. These were the royal guards who protected Khaenri'ah hundreds of years ago. He ultimately failed his duty and was given the curse of immortality. Cursed with a long life, Dainsleif saw how his people turned into monsters.

Continuing the story, we’ve seen that Dainsleif became a pupil of the Black Serpent Bladework under his instructor, Haden, supervision. As time passed, Dainsleif’s hatred toward Haden grew larger as he’d seen how he suppressed and punished the students.

Dainsleif’s own rival, Surtalogi, who was his best friend back then, told Dainsleif of how he lost his limbs because of the machinations by none other than Haden himself.

Now that the people of Khaenri'ah have turned into the Abyss Order monsters, Dainsleif has nothing but one goal: to eradicate these monsters and defeat the Abyss Order once and for all. Although there’s no official news about the deeper story, his motivation remains unclear. Does he just want to mercy kill the people? Or is there something else?

There’s also a story about Dainsleif and the Abyss Twin. In fact, they have been traveling for years. Although the travel duration is unclear, it’s an actual fact because the party has been traveling across Tevyat, even before the calamity happened in Khaenri'ah.

Dainsleif In-Game Appearances

For those who don’t even remember who Dainsleif actually is, we’d like to give you a reminder. In your journey across different regions and nations in Genshin Impact, you’ve met him several times.

Dainsleif made his debut appearance in the Prelude Bough Keeper: Dainsleif. Does anyone remember this? Dainsleif met the Traveler for the first time in Angel's Share. The Traveler can ask Dainsleif to travel with them for the payment of three questions and 500 mora.

This starts the mission where Dainsleif, The Traveler, and Paimon look for the Abyss Order traces. The party then travels to the Temple of the Falcon and Wolvendom, and eventually Stormterror's Lair.

What’s interesting is that by seeing the last events of the Prelude Chapter, we may understand that this event quest actually intersects with the story teaser of ''We Will Be Reunited''. There are some signs of it, like the Traveler who’s fighting, footprints of the Ruin Guard, and a Dandelion cameo.

Quests that are related to the Abyss Order will always be tied to Dainsleif. For example, you can meet him once again during an investigation commission about the Abyss Order. During the event, Dainsleif will explain to the Traveler about what has happened to Khaenri'ah.

The story continues after the party has successfully defeated the Abyss Herald, where the Traveler's lost twin is finally revealed. This surprising event is not that shocking for Dainsleif because he and the Abyss Prince/Princess had been traveling together for quite some time. Right after, the Abyss sibling runs away through a portal with Dainsleif running after him/her.

The Traveler meets Dainsleif once again during their expedition to the Chasm in a quest related to the Abyss Order. There, they greet an old friend called Halfdan and gain more information about the sibling.

Another lore bomb was dropped by Dainsleif in a dialogue about his older brother. In the conversation, it was revealed that his brother is one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah. These are the individuals who gained the world-breaking powers and decided to keep them for themselves, instead of preventing the Cataclysm hundreds of years ago.
