The Shawshank Redemption was an American drama film released in 1994, directed by Frank Darabont, starring Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton. Even though The Shawshank Redemption got positive feedback from critics and viewers, the movie only got $16 million at the first box office. After getting many award nominations, the movie got a theatrical re-release which increased the total gross of the movie to $58.3 million.
The Shawshank Redemption Plot
The Shawshank Redemption was based on the novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King in 1982. The movie tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne. He is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at the Shawshank State Penitentiary in 1947 for murdering his wife and children, which he insisted that he didn't do it.
In the prison, he befriends Ellis "Red" Redding, a smuggler who is serving a life sentence. While working in the prison laundry, a group of prisoners called "the Sisters" and their leader, Bogs, often sexually assault Andy.
In 1949, Andy overhears that the captain of the guard, Byron Hadley, is having a problem with inheritance and offers him help. Thanks to this, after nearly being killed by the Sisters, Hadley punished Bogs and moves him to another cell to keep Andy safe.
Warden Samuel Norton talks to Andy and moves him to work in the prison library to assist an old inmate named Brooks Hatlen. He does this so Andy can take care of financial problems for other prison staff, guards, and himself. Andy starts writing letters to the state legislature requesting funds to improve the prison library.
In 1954, Brooks Hatlen eventually gets out of prison after serving 50 years but he cannot adapt to the outside world so he hangs himself. In 1963, Norton start making profits for himself by cutting labor costs, receiving bribes, and abusing prison labor. Andy launders the money for Norton under the name "Randall Stephens".
In 1965, Tommy Williams is imprisoned. Andy and Red make friends with him and help him with the GEP exam. One year later, Tommy revealed to Andy that his cellmate was the one who killed his wife and children. Andy talks to Norton about this but Norton doesn't want to hear. When Andy mentions the money laundering, Norton put him sends him to solitary confinement and tells Hadley to murder Tommy under the guise of an escape attempt.
Andy wants to stop the money laundering but Norton threatens to destroy the library, move him to a worse place, and let the guards beat him. After 2 months in solitary confinement, Andy asks a fellow inmate for a 6 feet long rope, which makes Red worry.
At the next day's roll call, the guards find Andy's cell empty. Norton gets angry and throws a rock at the Raquel Welch poster of the cell and reveals a tunnel that Andy has been digging for the last 19 years. Andy uses the rope to go through the tunnel and prison sewage with Norton's suit and a book with proof of his money laundering. When he gets out, he poses as Randall Stephens to withdraw $370,000 from several banks and sends proofs to a local newspaper.
The state police go to Shawshank prison to arrest Hadley. Norton suicide in his room so he doesn't get arrested.
Red is out of prison after serving 40 years. While he worries that he won't be able to adapt to the outside world, he remembers his promise to Andy. he goes to Buxton and finds a box with money and a letter from Andy. Red follows Andy's letter and goes to Zihuatanejo to reunite with him on a beach.
