Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24 have officially confirmed the release date and full cast for the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the blockbuster video game Elden Ring. The dark fantasy epic, written and directed by Alex Garland, will hit theaters on March 3, 2028, and will be filmed for IMAX.

The announcement marks a major milestone for the project first revealed in development in May 2025. Principal photography kicked off this spring in the United Kingdom, with additional shooting planned for Scotland and Iceland over the summer. The production carries a budget exceeding 100 million dollars and is expected to wrap after roughly 100 days of filming.

Garland, known for films such as Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and the recent Warfare, crafted a 160-page spec script complete with visual boards after pitching the idea directly to FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki. The adaptation draws from the game’s sprawling Lands Between setting, where a Tarnished warrior seeks to repair the shattered Elden Ring and claim the title of Elden Lord. The original game, which features world-building contributions from George R.R. Martin, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide since its 2022 launch.

Cast Lineup

The cast brings together an impressive ensemble of rising and established talent:

  • Kit Connor (Heartstopper, Warfare)
  • Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Civil War)
  • Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Paddington)
  • Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Black Bag)
  • Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms)
  • Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina)
  • Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)
  • Ruby Cruz (Willow, Bottoms)
  • Nick Offerman (The Last of Us)
  • John Hodgkinson
  • Jefferson Hall
  • Emma Laird
  • Peter Serafinowicz

No specific character roles have been revealed yet, but industry reports indicate Connor and Spaeny are in lead positions, with the rest filling key supporting parts.

George R.R. Martin has publicly voiced his support for the project, which aligns with his earlier involvement in the game’s lore. A24 will handle U.S. distribution, with international partners still to be detailed.

Fans of the game have reacted with a mix of excitement and cautious optimism online, given the challenges of translating Elden Ring’s cryptic storytelling and punishing gameplay into a feature film. Garland’s track record with ambitious, visually driven sci-fi and action projects has many hoping the adaptation will capture the same sense of wonder and danger that made the game a cultural phenomenon.

Further updates on plot details, character reveals, and first-look images are expected as production advances.
