Updated March 31, 2026 — Following the enormous success of the 2025 original (which earned nearly one billion dollars worldwide), Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures wasted no time greenlighting a sequel. The highly anticipated follow-up is already taking shape, and fans are eager for more cubic chaos.
Release Date
Minecraft 2 will arrive in theaters worldwide on July 23, 2027. The date was officially revealed on October 9, 2025, through a simple teaser post on the official Minecraft Movie social channels that simply read: “Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23, 2027.”
The two-year gap gives the creative team plenty of time to craft a bigger, more ambitious adventure while capitalizing on the first film’s record-breaking box-office performance.
Cast
The core cast from the original film is largely returning, and one major new addition has already been confirmed.
- Jack Black as Steve — the expert crafter and central hero
- Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison — the pro-gamer turned reluctant adventurer
- Danielle Brooks as Dawn
- Emma Myers as Natalie
- Sebastian Hansen as Henry
- Jennifer Coolidge as Principal Marlene
- Matt Berry — expected to reprise his role (possibly as the Nitwit villager)
- Kirsten Dunst as Alex — the brand-new addition announced on March 19, 2026. Dunst will portray the iconic second default player skin, fulfilling her public wish to join the franchise.
Quick note: Jason Momoa is also serving as a producer on the sequel, further cementing his deep involvement in the Minecraft cinematic universe.
Plot
Official plot details are still being kept tightly under wraps, but several reliable reports and insider comments have painted an exciting picture of what to expect.
The story will pick up after the events of the first movie and follow Steve (Jack Black) and the newly introduced Alex (Kirsten Dunst) as they venture deeper into the Overworld. Expect fresh biomes, unexplored territories, and brand-new challenges. Multiple sources indicate the film will finally bring the legendary Ender Dragon to the big screen — the most requested villain from the game and the perfect centerpiece for a sequel.
Director Jared Hess and co-writer Chris Galletta are said to be expanding the playful tone of the original while adding bigger set pieces and more Minecraft lore. A post-credits scene from the first film is also expected to play directly into the new story.
Production Status and Other Key Details
Jared Hess is back in the director’s chair and will once again co-write the script. Filming is scheduled to begin at the end of April 2026 in Auckland, New Zealand — the same location used for much of the first movie’s live-action and visual-effects work.
No trailer has been released yet, but with cameras rolling in just a few weeks, the first teaser is likely only months away. Warner Bros. has not yet revealed an official title (it is currently referred to internally as Minecraft 2 or Untitled A Minecraft Movie Sequel), but the working title has already appeared on early production documents.
The first film proved that a video-game adaptation could be both a critical and commercial smash. With the sequel already locked into a prime summer slot and a proven creative team, expectations are sky-high for another record-breaking block-buster.
