Steam has just released its top lists for 2019 in various sections: bestsellers, early access, most simultaneous players, top new releases and VR games. After all the effort from its competitors, Epic Games Store, Stadia and the like, Steam still remains on top. And because of that, Steam’s top list would be an accurate metric to gauge current trends about popular games.

1 – Top Sellers

Overall, the Top Sellers games are pretty predictable, with GTA 5 scoring the first position for a few years in a row. The rest can be divided into two categories, Multiplayers, and Specials. In the first category are CS: GO, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, TES Online and Monster Hunter: World. These games have been staying steady on both content quality and player count over the year. The rest are CIV 6, Three Kingdoms and Sekiro, all individually good games.

2 – Top New Releases

There are 11 games in this section. Amongst them, only Three Kingdoms and Planet Zoo are not “a combination of Action and RPG”

The rest can be divided into Action RPG and RPG, With Devil May Cry 5 on one side and Red Dead Redemption 2 on the other. Sekiro, RE 2 Remake, Jedi: Fallen Order and Code Vein lie somewhere in between. With Sekiro winning GOTY in this year’s The Game Awards, it looks like the Souls-like genre is getting more and more mainstream. Various Souls clone like Code Vein has been doing pretty well.

3 – Most Played

Out of the seven most played games, only one name is a surprise. Overall, GTA 5, Rainbow Six Siege, PUBG, and CS: GO are expected. Halo collection is more or less a given, as people were scrambling to buy the thing when Reach was released. Sekiro is 2019’s GOTY. Total War: Three Kingdoms, however, is a turn-based strategy game that has never really been popular. This is the first time the series goes to China, however, so this is probably the Chinese player base speaking

4 – Early Access Graduate

The 10 games in this section can be divided into three categories: Multiplayer Shooter (Hunt: Showdown, Battalion 1944), Survival Craft (Green Hell, Astroneer), Base building (Oxygen not included, My time at Portia and They Are Billions). The other two games are PC Building Sim and Slay The Spire.

These above games are the best and most popular video games in the market at the moment. If you are going to play something, consider picking from this lot.
