As water breathing is needed to explore the ocean, most Minecraft players usually ignore the area. However, there are quite a few items that can only be obtained from aquatic mobs, which makes getting them rather tricky.

In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the 5 best aquatic mobs to farm in Minecraft and how to do it.

1. Guardian

Guardians are pufferfish-like hostile mobs that spawn in and around ocean monuments. By farming them, players can obtain valuable ingredients such as prismarine shards, crystals, and fish. They only spawn in Ocean Monuments, which can only be found in deep ocean biomes. Players can either explore randomly to stumble upon one, or use the command /locate monument to get the coordinate of the nearest Monument.

Elder Guardian
Elder Guardian is an unique variant of the Guardian.

Guardian spawns in water blocks within a 58×24×58 volume of the monument, usually from its base (usually Y=39) to just above the decorative structure at the top (usually Y=61).

Conduit Minecraft
Players need prismarine to create a conduit.

Elder Guardians are the elite version of the Guardians, with better stats and a special ability called "mining fatigue" that prevents players from breaking blocks. There is no avoiding this, as it is an aura that affects an area of 50 blocks around them. Usually, players need to kill all 3 Guardians to mine prismarine from the Monuments.

How to create a Guardian farm

If players want to farm Guardians without draining the whole area, they need to use soul sand to launch guardians upwards into a killing chamber. Just build a wall around the spawning area as usual then fill a number of ocean floor blocks with soul sand. The bigger the area, the greater the drops and yields.

Players need to clear the area from the monument floor to the surface to avoid any blocking of the guardians' ascent to the chamber. These are often placed near the ocean's surface. Set your particle to minimal, as large blocks of bubble columns can massively lower your FPS.

2. Drowned

The only way to get a trident in Minecraft is by killing a Drowned that is carrying a trident. Not all spawned Drowneds will carry a trident though. A Drowned has 6.25% (15% in Java Edition) to spawn with a trident. When you kill a Drowned with a trident, it will have an 8.5% of dropping a Trident. If your weapon has a Looting enchantment, the chance of getting a trident will increase by 1% for every level of the Looting enchantment.

How to create a Drowned farm

The simplest way to farm Drowned is the flooded dungeon method. It can produce the majority of material dropped from zombies and drowned, except for nautilus shells or tridents. In Bedrock Edition this farm also produces nautilus shells, but not tridents.

A flooded dungeon farm works by spawning zombies using the dungeon's monster spawner. Afterward, funnel the zombies into an underwater chamber to drown them, which in turn converts them to Drowned. After this, players can either kill them manually or create a trap to automatically dispose of them.

3. Salmon

Salmon is one of the most common fish in the game that players can find in oceans and rivers. Groups of up to five spawn specifically in cold or frozen ocean biomes. In Bedrock, they also spawn in normal and lukewarm oceans. They respawn relatively quickly so there's no need to breed them.

Cooked salmon is a fantastic food item. It restores 9.6 saturation, nearly the same as a cooked steak. Two pieces regenerate 19.2 saturation (equivalent to 20), filling the saturation bar completely. This food can be found fairly early on, provided that there are salmon in the area. Players should cook the meat at campfires to increase its potency.

4. Glow Squid

Schools of 2 to 4 glow squid spawn in water in complete darkness in the Overworld anywhere below layer 30. The Glow Ink Sacs they drop can be one of the materials to make a Glow Item Frame. A Glow Item Frame also lets players show their favorite items and weapons in their house like common Frames. They will shine in the dark, looking much more appealing. It is also possible to use it on signs to make the text glow and slightly stand out.

Normal Squids are pretty much identical to their glowing variant - they only drop black ink, however. Their spawn level is also a bit different - normal squids spawn on Y-level 50 to 63.

How to farm squid in Minecraft

This design takes more time to be built but can achieve a very high ink rate.

  • First of all, you should clear as much water as possible out of the river or ocean biome within the render distance of the player.
  • You have to build a chamber between layers 46 and 62, and fill it with water so squid will spawn.
  • To make water push the squid to the bottom you have to place water sources only in the top layer, and also place solid column blocks, as water will only push if it has an adjacent solid block.
  • Underneath the spawning chamber will be a layer of signs that can be traversed by squid but not water.
  • Squid crossing the sign layer will land on a hopper platform, where squid will die either by fall damage or suffocation and will gather all the resulting ink and send it to chests.
