Some may be questioning whether it's worth exploring the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition in 2023. It's important to note that this game refers to the 2021 upgraded versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas, as opposed to the original three games. As such, players may need some encouragement to try out these much-discussed remasters.
While the GTA Trilogy has its detractors and is known for its flaws, it's still worth highlighting the positive aspects of the game. Despite not being perfect, there are some genuinely enjoyable elements to this collection of upgraded games that players might appreciate.
1. Improved graphics and gameplay
To begin with, the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition has undergone remastering using Unreal Engine 4, resulting in improved graphics and better HD textures for all three games. This engine has allowed for enhanced draw distance, more precise visuals, and improved lighting, setting it apart from the original versions. Additionally, the Definitive Edition can run smoothly in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on modern consoles such as the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
While the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition offers updated graphics and some quality-of-life improvements not found in the original three titles, the core gameplay remains largely unchanged. Fans of the "classic masterpieces" should find the Definitive Editions to be familiar. However, even some of the classic bugs from the original games have returned, and the new versions also have their fair share of glitches, which players have been discussing online for the past few months.
2. Modern controls
The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition has made significant changes to its controls, including the introduction of the Weapon Wheel, a feature from newer GTA titles. This feature is now available in all three games in the collection. Additionally, the controls for changing radio stations have been improved for quicker and more straightforward access.
The driving experience has also been updated to align with more modern games in the series. Finally, Nintendo Switch users can take advantage of the Gyroscope pointing feature for a more immersive gameplay experience. These changes aim to enhance the overall gameplay experience for players and make it easier to enjoy the classic titles in the series.
3. Ability to restart missions and better minimap
In the original versions of the three games, players did not have the option to set up waypoints for navigation and had to rely on their instincts to travel around. While this added to the challenge and sense of exploration, the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition now offers players greater accessibility with the ability to set up waypoints and receive navigation guidance on mini-maps for their chosen destinations. This feature is inspired by more modern games in the series and is a welcome addition to the Definitive Edition.
Another significant addition to the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition is the ability to instantly restart missions without the need to go back and start from the beginning. This feature was not available in the original games and is one of the biggest gameplay changes in the Definitive Edition. With this new option, players can easily retry any failed missions without worrying about long loading screens or losing progress. This feature has been well-received and is considered a significant improvement to the overall gameplay experience.
4. Available on modern platforms
The remaster brings these 3 games to modern platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Rockstar Games Launcher and Steam. The original, on the other hand, is locked to PC and various old consoles of the previous generation.
Before the release of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition on PC, it was announced that the game would also be ported to Android and iOS. However, as of now, the release date for the mobile port remains unknown, according to Take-Two. It is possible that the release of the mobile version could be delayed until after the marketing campaign for GTA 6 has begun, as Rockstar is likely focused on the development of their next major release.
A Twitter user named Gaming Detecting also speculated on the issue, suggesting that fans should not expect a release date for the Trilogy until some progress has been made on the development of GTA 6. While there has been no official announcement regarding the cancellation of the mobile port, fans can still purchase the older versions of the three games from the Google Play Store.
5. Updated effects
The original San Andreas had fog and light haze, which added to the game's LA atmosphere, but it was more of a technical limitation than an artistic choice. With increased draw distance in the Definitive Edition, players can now see everything in front of them, which can make the world feel small. It can be strange to see Mount Chiliad from the bridge near Grove Street or see the entire map while flying around in a jet.
The Definitive Edition also has enhanced details in trees and foliage, making the forests around Flint County in San Andreas and parks and neighborhoods around Liberty City look more realistic. Additionally, there are 3D parallax interiors included for many buildings and windows throughout the games, which adds more depth and life to the cities.
