The wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 now has a runtime attached to it. In a New York Times interview tied to this week’s Netflix Extended Look, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said his February playthrough lasted about 80 hours.
That figure is already being treated as the official story length. It is not quite that simple.

What the 80 hours include
Nelson did not say the critical path alone takes 80 hours. His run covered the main story plus some “optional goals with narrative ramifications.” Some side jobs appear to feed back into the campaign rather than sitting off to the side as busywork. How much of those 80 hours came from extras is unknown. A studio lead who already knows the map will also finish faster than a first-time player lost in Leonida.
The cautious read: 80 hours is one developer’s story-plus-some-sides run on a near-final build. It is not a 100 percent completion estimate.
Longer than Rockstar’s last games
A focused Grand Theft Auto IV or Grand Theft Auto V campaign usually lands around 30 hours. Red Dead Redemption 2 is commonly cited at 50 to 60 hours for the main narrative. If Nelson’s run is even roughly representative, GTA 6 would be the longest Rockstar single-player story the company has shipped.
Full completion is still a guess. GTA V 100 percent runs often sit near 80 to 90 hours. Red Dead Redemption 2 can stretch well past 150. With a bigger map and more systems, a complete GTA 6 clear could easily run into triple digits.
Live in the world, don’t sprint it
Nelson’s comments were less a boast about length than a pitch for daily life in Leonida. “I hope that there will be people that want to get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise,” he said. “Interact with some people, explore, maybe get into some trouble. Rob some places, make some money.”
Previews have shown basketball, fishing, workouts, robberies, and a wanted system meant to remember more than the last few minutes of chaos. A Criminal Profile layer tracks patterns of violence over time. Some of those 80 hours may be downtime Rockstar now treats as part of the game.
The map adds hours on its own
Rockstar says Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City itself is described as twice the size of Los Santos. Confirmed regions include Vice City, Port Gellhorn, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers wetlands, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Ambrosia. Travel alone will eat clock in a way older maps never did.
That scale is why some outlets have floated 100 hours or more once side content enters the picture. Those higher totals remain estimates. Nelson’s 80 hours is still the only first-party playtime tied to a real run.
