Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has set a new series high on Steam. Trackers put the peak at about 52,600 concurrent players on October 3, 2026, a day after launch. SteamDB-linked reports cite 52,662 and 52,694. Either figure clears 52,000 and more than triples the old mark.

That mark belonged to Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which topped out at 13,758 players since its Steam release on January 31, 2019. Assault Horizon, the only earlier entry with a real Steam footprint, peaked at 3,795. Wings of Theve passed both in its opening window, with no film tie-in and no deep discount behind the jump.
Bandai Namco Aces developed the game. Bandai Namco published it on October 2 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, after Deluxe early access from September 29. The Steam edition is $69.99. The campaign covers a war between the Republic of Sotoa and the Federation of Central Usea, with the player flying a legendary callsign alongside Joker Flight.
The count is a PC story, not a sales total. Console numbers are not public, and Bandai Namco has not posted units sold. Even so, it is the third biggest Steam opening for the publisher, behind Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon at 156,171 and Digimon Story: Time Stranger at 84,458. It also sits above 2026 label releases such as Echoes of Aincrad and Code Vein 2.

Critics have praised the missions, and at least one outlet scored the game 9 out of 10. Steam was harsher at first. Early access reviews dipped over frame drops, crashes, ray tracing that cannot be turned off, and thin graphics options. A pre-order bonus added heat: Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is standalone on console, but on PC it is a small executable that still needs the full Ace Combat 8 download. Easy Anti-Cheat has also blocked some Linux and SteamOS players from online missions.
By the first weekend, Steam reviews sat near 76 percent positive. Players still single out the flying, the campaign, and the music. The peak holding into October 3 suggests the surge was not a one-hour spike. For a series that lived on consoles, that is the real shift.
