Valve shipped City Never Sleeps for Deadlock on September 29, 2026, and the invite-only hero shooter answered with its biggest crowd yet. SteamDB logged an all-time peak of 228,086 concurrent players, up from the previous record of 171,490 set in September 2024. The game also climbed near the top of Steam's most-played chart, which is a loud result for a title that still has no public launch and no open signup.

What the update adds

City Never Sleeps is the largest content drop since January's Old Gods, New Blood. It brings six new heroes: Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, and Violet. They do not all arrive at once. The first hero is set for October 2, then two more land each week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Players vote on the order in a pre-match lobby, and the winning side's votes count double, along with the day's first win.

The map has been rebuilt around a clearer New York. Lanes now use street names such as Broadway, Greenwich, and York, with landmarks including Times Square and the Stock Exchange. Four new districts sit between the lanes: Theater District, Chinatown, a haunted lot (also called the Cursed Wasteland in some coverage), and the Plaza. Old neutral camps are gone. In their place are Haunts, district-specific creeps with their own objectives.

Systems under the heroes

Valve also refreshed the HUD, health bars, and the shop, and pushed the game onto a newer Source 2 build. That pass covers anti-cheat, prediction, rendering, audio, item art, and new melee sound effects. Ping options grew by a wide margin, so callouts in lane fights should be easier to read.

Still not a launch

Access remains invite-only. Alongside the patch, Valve said core work is not finished. Item redesigns, possible alternate modes, Midboss changes, and updates to Guardians and Walkers are still ahead. Older hero art is later polish, not this update. For a closed test, 228,086 players is the clearest sign yet that the lane shooter still has an audience waiting on the next drop.
