Shadows

Dead Space Remake's horror scenarios make use of shadows a lot, and dialing them down would definitely free up some frames. Even the low setting is a hell of an improvement over the original 2008 PC version.

Lighting

Similar to Shadows, the remake uses light sources to drench the mining ship with atmospheric dread. Players should leave it at least at Medium for get some benefits while keeping framerate high.

Volumetric resolution

There's a lot of steam effects in Dead Space, which means Volumetric resolution is an important option. Keeping it at medium might improve performance in certain areas.

Ambient Occlusion

Ambient Occlusion is probably the costliest settings in Dead Space Remake - it can greatly drag down performance, especially if you are using an older GPU. Overall, going for SSAO is probably the safest option, allowing high-end visual results without paying fancy rendering performance tax.

Is Dead Space Remake a good game?

The Dead Space Remake is truly one of the best remakes out there, heavily improving on the original game in many different ways rather than just being a simple graphical overhaul. This remake adds extra side missions, stunning visual enhancements, and impressive sound design, providing a true current-gen experience while the core gameplay stays true to the original game. It's a mix of nostalgia and freshness that targets both OG fans and new players. The game provides a jaw-dropping cinematic experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat until it ends.

Dead Space Remake

Gameplay wise, the entire game was basically rebuilt from scratch, and almost all of the rougher elements of the original have been vastly improved, such as the Zero-G sections utilising Dead Space 2's system, or the numerous new side quests or bits of dialogue that tie-in all of the lore that came after the original's release.

I have to say one of my favorite changes with this remake is the fact that instead of being a chapter-based setup locked behind the tram, this version of the Ishimura is completely open and you can take the tram anywhere and anytime you want. With the new security clearance system this strongly encourages backtracking when you unlock access to new areas. I was also very happy to see that the game clearly indicates the "point of no return" where you might want to wrap up any side quests before finishing the main story.

This is definitely the definitive way to play Dead Space, and it is 100% worth playing even if you've played the original, as there's so much more to explore and discover, while at the same time looking absolutely stunning.
