Villagers are useful passive mobs. Players can use emeralds to trade with them for rare items such as enchanted diamond armor or bottles o' enchanting. However, finding a village can be tricky, especially if you are playing on a randomly generated world without using a seed.
The simplest solution for this is to create your own village. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase a complete guide on how to create a village in Minecraft 1.19.

1. Obtaining villagers
There are 2 ways to obtain villagers from the overworld: Kidnapping from a village and curing a zombie villager.
Kidnapping from a village
Firstly, players need to put the villager on a boat by pushing or driving the boat into them. They will not leave until the boat is broken.
Push the boat to the location you want to build a village. They can be moved on level ground (without water).
Curing a zombie villager
Zombie villagers can be found in abandoned villages, or in igloo basements, but occasionally they can be found anywhere in the overworld.
Firstly, players should create a 2/3 block deep hole to trap them, then cure them with a splash potion of Weakness and a golden apple. Cover them with a roof first if needed, as they burn in sunlight. Players can move them around afterward.
The igloo basement has one zombie villager and one cleric, which you can cure to create 2 villagers for breeding right away. Just transport them to the top using minecarts first if needed.
2. How to create a Village in Minecraft
Generally, a villager needs to stay in a house to be sheltered from hostile threats such as zombies and illagers, which attack them on sight. The only requirement for a house is a bed.
Simple hut
This is for those who want the villagers to start breeding, or are low on supplies.
Just place a bed and wait for a villager to come and sleep on it. Build walls around the bed then place some torches and maybe a working block.
Breeding huts
This is an easy way to group up your villagers so that they can breed and multiply.
- Place 10 beds, then place a bell where villagers can gather.
- Place at least one Composter to make at least one villager adopt the profession of farmer.
- Dig a hole and fill it with water, then make some farmlands and give the farmer some seeds (wheat or beetroot), potatoes or carrots, so they can plant and harvest crops to share food with other villagers, which makes them willing to breed.
Trading hall
Trading hall is an advanced villager housing unit that imprisons villagers for convenient trading. Entry should be blocked by iron doors or fence gates to prevent escape, and the entire building needs to be well-lit.
The core of a trading hall is the villager's cubicles where you store the villagers. These need to have at least four blocks of floor space each: Two for a bed, one for a job site block, and one for the villager to stand. The open space should be between the head of the bed and the fence gate.
Ceilings should be three blocks high to allow iron golems to move around and allow villagers to breed. You can either separate the cubicles with walls or just let them open so that villagers can breed freely.
3. Building village defense
As artificial villages can be attacked by zombie sieges and illager raids similar to a normal village, players also need to build a defense for it as well. Please note that the larger your village is, the more prone it is to a zombie siege. In order for a zombie siege to occur, there must be at least 10 beds or 20 villagers and the player must be present in the village.
Firstly, place at least one bell and make sure it is in the most secure location in the village. Players can trigger the bell in case of an attack to gather villagers to a defensible spot.
Afterward, light up the area inside the Village to minimize hostile mob spawning at night. Build walls around the base - players can add various other defenses to their liking.
Best defense mechanics for villages
- Iron Golems: If you can farm enough iron ingots and pumpkins, mass iron golems are the perfect defense.
- Cactus: deals damage to all mobs on contact.
- Lava/magma/burning netherrack: burns mobs on contact, dealing heavy damage.
- Cobweb/Soul Sand: mobs are greatly slowed down in soul sand and stuck in cobwebs, immobilizing them to be killed.
- Flowing water: by using an overhang, a player can run a waterfall down the wall of their base.
