Jagex has confirmed it is developing a fourth massively multiplayer game in the RuneScape franchise. The studio revealed the project at RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham, where more than 6,000 fans gathered for the event.

For now it carries the working title RS4. Jagex says that label simply marks it as the fourth generation of a RuneScape project, and the public name may change. Release is still a few years away, and platforms have not been announced.
RS4 is being built in Unreal Engine and is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age. It begins in Ashenfall, a region north-east of the main continent that players first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The story picks up years after the events of Dragonwilds and the defeat of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Jagex has said Ashenfall is only the starting point, with plans to expand into familiar and new parts of the world over time.
The studio has been clear that the new MMO is not a replacement. It will sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Those games keep their own teams, roadmaps, and ongoing investment. Jagex describes RS4 as a standalone experience aimed at a new generation of players, mixing the depth and community focus of the series with modern technology.
Reports from the show also note that the project grew out of work that began as a planned expansion for Dragonwilds before it became a full MMO. More detail on the world, the team, and ways for players to get involved is expected next year.
RuneFest brought other news as well, including RuneScape Reignited, a December 2 relaunch of the main game, and a packed Old School roadmap that finally opens Menaphos. Jagex also said work has started on an animated RuneScape series with Charlie White, known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and Lyrical Animation.
