Nintendo and Monolith Soft are giving one of the Switch's biggest RPGs a fresh coat of paint for the new console. The Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrives digitally on July 30, 2026, with a physical release following on October 1. Existing owners of the original game can upgrade via a paid pack.
Technical Upgrades
The update focuses on technical improvements and some meaningful new content. In TV mode the game runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. Handheld play targets full HD at the same framerate. Cutscenes have also been refined with higher resolution, smoother animation and added visual detail. These enhancements extend to the Torna ~ The Golden Country expansion as well.
New Outfits, Blade and Mode
Beyond the visual upgrades, the Switch 2 Edition adds several exclusive features. Players can unlock new outfit designs for Pyra and Mythra. These appear both during regular gameplay and in cutscenes, and they can be swapped with the original looks at any time. The outfits are obtained as rewards through the new Merc Assault mode.
Merc Assault lets players take direct control of Blades during mercenary missions. Up to six Blades can be selected for a squad. During battle you move and fight as any of them, swapping freely between the group. Combining Blade Specials remains a key part of winning these encounters.
A brand-new Rare Blade named MOMO also joins the roster. Drawn from the Xenosaga series, MOMO can switch between two forms (sometimes described as light and dark, or real and imaginary). The change alters both her appearance and elemental affinity. She comes with her own dedicated Blade Quest.
Story and Availability
The original story remains intact. Players still follow Rex, a young scavenger, and Pyra, a living Blade, as they travel across Titans in search of the legendary paradise known as Elysium. The core combat system of Drivers and Blades, exploration of vast landscapes, and the game's signature story continue as before, now presented with sharper performance and a handful of new ways to engage with the systems.
Pre-orders for the digital version and upgrade pack are already live on the Nintendo eShop. The physical edition arrives later in the fall. For longtime fans who never finished the game or want another run with better visuals and a few new toys, the Switch 2 Edition offers a convenient reason to return to Alrest.
