After a strong launch on Nintendo Switch in April, the acclaimed card-based RPG SteamWorld Quest from Swedish studio Image & Form has been confirmed to be hitting Steam later this month on the 31st.
The SteamWorld series has witnessed several releases that span across multiple genres, from platformers like SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2) to turn-based strategy (SteamWorld Heist) to tower defense (SteamWorld Tower Defense). Now, this latest installment, whose full name is SteamWorld Quest: The Hand of Gilgamech, looks to add RPG card-battler to the collection.
SteamWorld Quest Steam Release Announcement
Similar to previous titles, SteamWorld is set in a delightful world occupied by robots. However, this time there is some fantasy tone added to the mix as well. Throughout the game, you’ll have the chance to encounter valiant knights, vicious dragons, and more.
The real highlight, though, is the extensive story and turn-based RPG elements supported by an expansive card-based combat system.
Basically, at the beginning of each turn, you choose 3 cards to play, which will then take effect in the order that you picked. Afterwards, your enemy will do the same, and so the battle drags on until one side achieves victory.
Needless to say, this mechanic will demand a certain level of strategic foresight. To truly become a master, you must take into account the steam cost of each card, the possible combos that you can pull off to maximize the potential of the cards you’re dealt.
"SteamWorld Quest covers all its bases. But it also has a surprising pacing that I grew to love, offering fewer random battles than expected, but always against meaty foes," said Christian Donlan, a reviewer from Eurogamer, "Every fight can feel a bit like a boss here, and the health system encourages you to take the challenge seriously".
"After Slay the Spire I thought I had the only card battling RPG I needed for the time being. But I should never bet against the SteamWorld team, and so it proved here," he went on, "Wit, warmth, smart mechanics and a surprising challenge all make SteamWorld Quest a delight".
SteamWorld Quest is set to release on Steam on May 31st.
