Fans have been begging for a remastered Grand Theft Auto IV for ages, but it looks like Rockstar’s putting Arthur Morgan’s wild west adventure first. Word on the street is that Red Dead Redemption 2 is getting a shiny new remaster for PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and even the Nintendo Switch 2, leaving Niko Bellic’s Liberty City vibes on the backburner for now.
Switch 2’s Big Launch Title
Nintendo’s got their new console, the Switch 2, dropping on June 5, and they’re banking on Red Dead Redemption 2 to show off what it can do. Makes sense—when you’ve got one of the best-looking games ever made, why not use it to flex your new hardware? The game’s already sold a whopping 74 million copies since 2018, and it’s still a stunner, especially on PC.
For PS5 and Xbox players, this remaster is a big deal. The game’s been stuck at 30 frames per second on current-gen consoles, running in backward compatibility mode. With this update, expect a buttery-smooth 60fps, which is a game-changer for visuals. Plus, resolution’s getting a boost. Right now, the game fakes 4K with checkerboard rendering, but the PS5 Pro’s fancy upscaling tech could deliver something much closer to true 4K, like what PC players have had for years.
The Switch 2 version is a bit of a head-scratcher. It won’t pack the same punch as PS5 or Xbox, but it’s still expected to look and run better than the original console versions. Pulling off a game this massive on a handheld? That’s no small feat.
What’s This Mean for GTA Fans?
This remaster might give us a sneak peek at what Grand Theft Auto 6 could look like on PS5 Pro, minus the GTA V NaturalVision Evolved mod. As for GTA IV and Niko’s bowling adventures, no word yet on when that remaster might happen. Patience, folks.
The Red Dead 2 remaster is slated for fall 2025, so we’ve got a bit of a wait. After seven years, though, a few more months won’t kill us. In other news, Grand Theft Auto III is hitting PlayStation Plus this month, and GTA V plus The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition are on sale for Sony’s 2025 Days of Play event. Oh, and GTA Online’s big summer update might drop as early as June 17. Keep your eyes peeled.
