Bethesda finally gave The Elder Scrolls VI a proper name on November 3, 2026. During a video marking the studio’s 40th anniversary, Todd Howard confirmed the long-awaited sequel is called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The brief teaser shows a scroll emerging from the sand and includes a line attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell in 4E 206: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.”

Setting and Story Leaks
The name and the desert imagery line up with years of fan speculation that the game would take place in Hammerfell. Recent leaks and reports had already pointed in that direction. Those same reports described Sentinel as the first mainline entry focused on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, with players uncovering the secrets of the mysterious ancient artifacts the series is named after. The teaser’s emphasis on a Moth Priest and a prophetic scroll fits that description cleanly.
Resurfaced Rumors About Todd Howard
The title reveal also dragged an old, colorful rumor back into circulation. A 2021 post claimed that after Breath of the Wild’s success, Todd Howard walked the office yelling vague complaints, then locked himself away and cried for an hour. The same story said the next Elder Scrolls game was supposed to be called Sentinel and feature sailing and naval combat until he learned Assassin’s Creed Odyssey already had ships, at which point he reportedly unplugged a coworker’s PC, scrapped the work, and shifted everyone onto Starfield. It further claimed he spent his days watching Elden Ring clips, laughing that Bethesda could do it better, and that some employees went to HR over the Elden Ring launch date because they felt unsafe around him.
Why the Old Story Is Circulating Again
The poster who resurfaced the story pointed to the new Sentinel logo’s Elden Ring-like rune styling as the reason the old tale suddenly felt more plausible. Others in the replies treated it as pure comedy. The original poster later clarified that the post was mainly for laughs. Still, the combination of the exact title match, the visual echo of Elden Ring, and Bethesda’s long stretch of mixed results after Starfield has been enough for some fans to treat the “Todd in a downward spiral” framing as more than a joke.
What We Know for Sure
No concrete evidence supports the personal claims about Howard. The studio has described Sentinel as its primary focus and said the team is playing it daily, while also noting that more substantial details are still a long way off. The game is still reportedly more than two years from release. Whether the rumors stick or fade, the name reveal has given players a clearer picture of where the series is headed: Hammerfell, the Elder Scrolls themselves, and a story that appears to dig into the artifacts’ deeper history.
