CD Projekt Red has given fans a clearer timeline for the next mainline entry in its acclaimed RPG series. In a video shared on official social channels ahead of Gamescom 2026, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window.

The Official Announcement
The announcement comes as the studio prepares for a strong presence at the event, though The Witcher 4 itself will not appear during Opening Night Live or on the show floor. Nowakowski addressed the long wait directly: “While we’re not showing the Witcher 4 at the event, and we’re not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.”
More than 500 developers are currently working on the project, which the studio describes as its biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date. The title stars Ciri as a seasoned witcher in a new saga, featuring a vast open world, intense action-focused gameplay, and a deep story.
Gamescom Focus and New Witcher 3 Content
Fans will not have to wait until 2028 for new Witcher content. CD Projekt Red is focusing its Gamescom efforts on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a new expansion scheduled for 2027. The DLC will be showcased during Opening Night Live and at the studio’s booth, with additional livestreams planned throughout the event. Nowakowski noted it serves in part as a reminder and informal prologue to the upcoming mainline game.
Development Background and Trilogy Plans
The Witcher 4 first appeared in a trailer at The Game Awards 2024 and later received a tech demo built in Unreal Engine 5. The studio has previously indicated it does not plan to release the game in 2026 and remains committed to delivering a new trilogy (The Witcher 4, 5, and 6) within a six-year span once the first title launches.
The 2028 target is presented as a goal rather than a fixed date, leaving room for the kind of adjustments the studio has made on past projects. For now, players can look forward to more details on the Witcher 3 expansion in the coming days while the larger team continues work on Ciri’s story.
