Tokyo Game Show marked its 30th year with a five-day run at Makuhari Messe from September 17 to 21, 2026. Publishers leaned on playable demos and late-show surprises more than brand-new franchise launches. These were the reveals that defined the opening days.
Kojima Steals the Xbox Broadcast
Xbox closed its TGS broadcast with Hideo Kojima. He confirmed that Bill Skarsgard will lead Physint, Kojima Productions' upcoming action-espionage game. The cast also includes Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima added that work on the horror title OD is moving forward. The same show also dropped a campaign trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, due October 23, 2026, with Mads Mikkelsen teased as a major antagonist.
Square Enix Lets Players Finish the Journey
The first hands-on demo for Final Fantasy VII Revelation was the Square Enix booth's main draw. Players explored the Whirlwind Maze with newly playable Vincent and Cid, tested the FITS role system, and fought Jenova Deathmourner. The closing chapter of the remake trilogy is set for April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. Final Fantasy Resonance also had a playable station ahead of its October 22, 2026 launch.
SEGA and Atlus Double Down on New and Old
RGG Studio's original action game Stranger Than Heaven drew long lines. The January 15, 2027 release spans decades of Japanese history and picked up a Toei film collaboration during the show. Atlus followed with a Naoto-focused trailer for Persona 4 Revival, scheduled for February 2027. SEGA also confirmed Japan as a destination in Crazy Taxi: World Tour.
Capcom, Konami, and a Chainsaw Sequel
Capcom's Spotlight put Proto Man front and center in Mega Man: Dual Override, dated Street Fighter 6 fighter Arjun for October 13, and set Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for October 9, 2026. Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes were confirmed for Switch 2 on October 16. Konami offered the first Japanese playable build of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. Dragami Games and JP Universe, led by Hajime Tabata, officially titled Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back and booked it for PlayStation 5 in 2027.
What the Show Signaled
TGS 2026 was less about surprise platforms and more about finishing work already in motion. Remakes, sequels, and late-stage demos dominated. Public days still have time to add smaller surprises, but the opening slate already set the tone for the next year of Japanese releases.
