It's not easy to take a story from a linear medium and put it in an interactive one. That is exactly why there has not been many good video game adaptation of movies. However it is not impossible to make that happen.

In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the top 10 best video games based on movies to play in 2023.

1. Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the iconic Wizarding World setting created by J.K. Rowling, at a time far before Harry & friends were even born. The world is vast and visually magnificent, peppered to no-end with points of interest that often hold collectibles, currency or other utilities.

Combat feels engaging, well-paced and is more than a little gory for this universe’s standards, death will be far more common than in the movies or books. The way you can combine spell effects to your advantage and use the environment further adds to the base system, while the amount of passive upgrades with item traits and spell-related talents you can gain progressively add another layer of depth.

2. Alien: Isolation

Graphically, the game is absolutely stunning. Isolation aims to recreate Scott’s original style in the first Alien of “low fi sci fi”, and does it with perfection.

The level of detail that went into the alien AI is incredible. Though it's "learning" is not a full-scale machine learning algorithm, SEGA built a much lighter-weight system that behaves just as well. To the casual player, the xenomorph latches on to your strategies and ensures the player doesn't brute force a level the same way over and over, for an incredibly immersive survival experience.

3. LEGO Star Wars

LEGO Star Wars is a fantastic game that offers hours of fun and entertainment for players of all ages. The game has been expertly crafted to combine the exciting storyline of the Star Wars franchise with the humor and charm of LEGO.

One of the most entertaining aspects of the game is the witty and often hilarious dialogue that accompanies each level. Whether it's the bickering between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi or the quips from Han Solo, there's no shortage of funny jokes to enjoy.

4. Jurassic World Evolution 2

Jurassic World Evolution 2 is a park management sim set in the Jurassic Park franchise world. Everything you can expect from that is here, and yes, dinosaurs are the main attraction.

JWE 2 is a clear improvement over the first one in the series, with fantastic visuals and good voice acting. Be ready for some micromanagement, but it’s not as bad as they say. If you like dinosaurs or the JP franchise, give it a go.

5. Mad Max

Mad Max puts you in the role of the titular, iconic character from the movie franchise and plays and feels darn close to the films. The game's story is fairly well written - it would make you feel like you're in the films' world.

There are tons of things to do - exploring, fighting, racing in a variety of contexts. Car customization lets you mix and match parts to find combo that best works for you.

6. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

The amount of work that have been put into Marvel’s Spider-Man is just mind blowing. You have tons of side quests and missions, there are a lot of crimes and while swinging through the city you have the feeling that you're a super hero and the city needs your help.

Graphics wise everything looks absolutely amazing. Filters, sunsets, characters design, textures, cutscenes, effects, other small details, extra - all of these create the feeling of realism and movie-like experience.

7. Batman: Arkham City

Arkham City is maybe still the definitive Batman game to this date in 2023 having been released 11 years ago. Arkham Asylum before it was a breakthrough game and really made you feel like you were Batman. This game expanded on that innovative formula but made it open world and it worked out very well.

One of the best aspects of this game are the boss fights. Each and every one of them are fun and memorable.

8. Middle-earth: Shadow of War

The combat is fluid and fun enough to keep the typical person entertained through Act I, but it's not really what the core of the game is. The core of the game is the Nemesis System.

Basically what the Nemesis System does is that when an enemy kills you, they get more powerful, but more than that, they remember that they killed you. Not to mention that your enemies can occasionally cheat death if you kill them, and they'll remember that you killed them, so they'll come back with a figurative axe to grind and a literal axe in their head.

9. THE THING

Unlike other horror movies, The Thing is perfectly suited to a creepy, action-adventure game. Set in an isolated Antarctic outpost, this game has the potential to scare you not with what you see, but when you don't see anything and yet you know the real danger could be standing right next to you with a gun in his hand.

10. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

Even if you aren't a massive Riddick or stealth genre fan (such as myself), there is still so much to enjoy and appreciate in this game.

The voice acting and stealth mechanics are in my opinion, second to none. The atmosphere is dark and gritty and the gameplay is impeccable, at least for its time - as are the graphics, for games released in 2004 and 2009 respectively, the graphics of both titles hold up even to some games released today and weren't far off ground breaking at their time of release.
