1. Red Dead Redemption 2
There are stories, good stories, and then there are those stories you'll remember for a long time. This game has it all. Adventure, tons of things to do, a marvelous story, fun gameplay, and most of all it leaves you with something. You really care for the characters, and the gang "family" becomes like your family, and when things go bad... you really want to help.
The game is not easy if you want to master everything, nothing hard if you want to jump from one mission to another, but it'll take you a bit of time to get familiar with all the activities that you can do, especially the hunting which is essential if you want to craft the best items in the game.
For the visuals, even while not at the ultra settings, this game is insanely beautiful, I never felt a world full of life as much as in RDR2, Rockstar went into each detail to create the last days of the Wild West and it a huge payoff for the players, you really feel like you riding with a gang in the early 1900s. And with photo mode, whatever you are doing and wherever you are on the map, be sure that you'll end up with a nice photo. I'll add to that the dynamic weather and different environment that won't change just the looks but also the fauna and flora of the region.
2. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
You've heard the main critiques of this game, and that is that the story was rushed because Konami put insane pressure over Hideo Kojima and his team. It sucks to get invested in this game so much for it to deliver a pretty subpar ending and final missions.
With that being said, this is probably one of the best Open World games money can buy for the PC. The controls are tight and responsive, the performance is fenomenal and will run smooth like butter if you tweak it to work on your hardware, and the gameplay is varied and insanely fun.
Interactivity and variety of play style are amazing, along the lines of Far Cry 3. You can approach any given scenario pretty much however you want. Charging in guns blazing will usually get you killed, but that's an option. Want to steal a tank and ride it into battle? That's an option. Command your horse to defecate (“Do it!”) on the road to cause enemy vehicles to swerve out of control? That's an option.
3. Watch Dogs 2
A huge improvement over WD1. WD2 takes the hacking formula, puts a relevant "hacktivist" modern (and sometimes heavy handed hipster) spin on it, and outshines the first game in pretty much every way.
This game is at its best when you DO NOT play it like GTA. It makes zero sense for a hacktivist group to be running around gunning down people in the streets. Use your gadgets, RC car & quadcopter, hacks, stealth, and other hacking-related things and you'll have a much better time. I found a good balance of non-lethal/lethal that I think makes sense and fits with the theme of the game.
Now, the open world. This game's open world might be one of the most detailed, immersive, and convincing one I've ever played in. All of the NPC interaction, and the fact that the NPCs are constantly going about their routines and have detailed behavior really make the world feel alive because they don't just feel like some static placeholders in the background.
4. Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is one of those open-world games that actually make you FEEL you'd WANT to explore the Rook Islands with its varied wild flora AND fauna (hostile or indifferent), as well as the various enemies (pirates or privateers) and with the Rakyat assisting at times. The story missions are quite a lot of fun, and if you level up properly none of them are very difficult (i.e. do the stealth kills and try to take down outposts undetected to get extra XP for the skills).
You started out as a party guy Jason Brody, who can't do anything. Your brother Grant was the ex-Army, and somehow you ended up captured on this island held by pirates and right in the INTRO sequence your brother got killed and your mad dash to freedom ended up with you diving over a waterfall, but you lived, and you woke up in a village, and handed your first mission... and a simple pistol... get up this tower on top of the hill, and activate it.
From there on, you steadily progress from a wimpy adrenaline junky to a fearsome killing machine capable of mowing down squads of professional mercenaries with LMG or assault rifle, hit wings off a fly at 100 yards with a sniper rifle, blade dance with professional knife fighters, stealth kill like a ninja, as you liberate the Rook Islands from two megalomaniacs, Vaas, and his boss, Hoyt, while recovering your friends one by one.
