Far Cry is a long running franchise of action adventure FPS games. While the first Far Cry and its spin-offs/remakes were typical FPS with discrete levels, the franchise takes on the open world style from the second entry forward.

There are minimal relations between the games - they usually just take players to a lawless frontier where they have to kill to survive. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase a complete list of all Far Cry games, from worst to best.

10. Far Cry Instincts

We open up this list with the console port of the first Far Cry game. There is not much to be said about this game - it is just a very linear shooter experience, stripped down a bit from the original due to the limited XBOX hardware. Players can probably clear the game out pretty fast in less than 10 hours.

It is not that bad at the time it was released, but by 2022 standards, Instinct is not worth your time.

9. Far Cry New Dawn

I think this was a pretty cool game but it felt like a DLC for Far Cry 5. Anyone who played Far Cry 5 will know that it legit continues from where it ended, with some new characters, and the same combat/perk system as Far Cry 5.

Even the map is pretty much the same, just with new things added to it color-wise. The story is okay but very short - it is almost like they took an FC5 DLC and make it a full game. I recommend this game only if you played Far Cry 5 before it.

8. Far Cry

Far Cry deserves its place in the pantheon of "Legendary FPS games". Released in 2004, even today it is comfortably better than many so-called "AAA" games released in the modern age. At the time of coming to market, Far Cry set new benchmarks for AI, graphics and gameplay. Loading was a thing of the past, with massive maps, near-unlimited draw distance, and missions that had multiple approaches to completion.

Where Half-Life 2 had the phenomenal Source engine and its spectacular physics and Doom 3 had the unbeatable dynamic lights and shadows, Far Cry had the best feature of them all: a (semi) non-linear game map style with proper jungle-based stealth.

7. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon

I describe Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon as a cheesy take on famous sci-fi and action films of the 1980s. It purposely reminds you of famous films like Terminator, Die Hard, Commando, Predator, Robocop, and Rocky IV. The gameplay is actually really good too. If you liked Far Cry 3 then you will like this one a lot. All the same amazing gameplay features that made Far Cry 3 so fun are there.

The environment is always dark so when you get your rifle upgraded to laser ammunition then you end up watching a laser show in every gunfight.

6. Far Cry 4

If you liked Far Cry 3, you will like this. It's a very similar open world game with lots to explore, do and find. The overall plot is OK, but no particularly clever bits nor anything particularly original. The voice acting is excellent.

Stealth is slightly better here than in the old one, enemies slightly smarter, and hostile areas slightly better designed from a gameplay perspective. Other than that - the same. It's a formula game, which, for me, is a flaw, but you decide for yourself.

5. Far Cry Primal

Far Cry Primal plays very much in the vein of Far Cry 3 and 4. The game feels familiar mechanically in that combat has the same weight and you can gather resources as in previous games, as well as tackle forts and bonfires (instead of radio towers). However, the prehistoric setting and the lack of vehicles and guns allow this entry to feel unique. Weapons must be crafted with resources found all throughout the map and there's a big focus on melee combat (though bows and throwable spears are present).

Throwables are handled creatively as instead of grenades, you get jars full of bees, berserker poison and fire. There isn't much story present, though essentially you're fighting for the dominance of your tribe within your immediate inhabitable region. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the real appeal of the game is its gameplay, just as the other games are focused on.

4. Far Cry 2

What Far Cry 2 does probably the best out of most sandbox games is it makes you feel like you live in Africa. The game's hud is minimalistic, your health pickups are syrettes of morphine. You're infected with malaria and regularly come down with a fever requiring constant supplies of medicine to avoid dying. Your guns visually decay and eventually break apart in your hands.

The world is beautiful but is always extremely hostile to the player. With long stretches of open land requiring almost constant access to vehicles and guard checkpoints at every corner forcing the player to massacre their way through. I never feel like I'm ever safe or that I'm ever comfortable when playing this game, and it's something that always fascinates me when I play it. I always feel like I'm perpetually on the brink of death in every firefight and I need to just keep pressing on, keep moving forward, and keep my finger on the trigger.

3. Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 is a decent entry into the series and is often underrated in comparison to previous titles. Honestly, if you played Far Cry 2, 3 or 4 - you know what to expect. Same game, different setting.

There's a basic but functional stealth system of silent melee takedowns, silent weapons like bows, throwing knives, and silenced guns, and enemies raising the alarm if they see you or find a dead body. You can conquer outposts either by going in slow and methodical, or you can just storm in guns blazing and mow everyone down with an MG.

2. Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 is bringing a brand new setup to a well-known franchise. As someone who always liked the Far Cry formula, Far Cry 6 is the most advanced, polished world ever built in this franchise. The map is massive, the world is gorgeous.

While the formula is kept - a FPS/shooter in an open world - there are some nice additions: the heat system is well aligned with the narrative: the Republic of Yara (the map, the game basically) is run by forces that drive constantly. You meet them on different occasions, roaming on the map, but contrary to the other Far Cry, if you keep your weapon in your holster and behave correctly, they will treat you like a random citizen. That's more strategy and stealth added to the Far Cry concept. It's very fun to keep a low profile while walking beside a tank patrolling. Knowing that you are going to a position where you are going to join the rebels for an attack. The developers have really created something unique here that we did not have previously. That makes the world lively and full of surprises.

1. Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 is maybe one of those games that really would put anyone in the protagonist's feelings. It is an open-world game that makes you think throughout any kind of mission such as stealth, dynamic or other ways of dominating outposts and the entire island.

Unlike Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 is more into the first game made from the Far Cry series, in the way that the action is based on a dangerous, hostile island and the protagonist has to make his way to get away from it. The storyline is as thrilling as it can be, stuck in a place you do not know, pirates, enemies, predators, and all sorts of plants that you have to collect so you can survive, an insane journey.

The main character has little battle and combat experience, so he has to learn how to survive from scratch, with little supplies, he is going to be helped by many people who will soon become his buddies/friends. During the game, you have to gain the "tatau", which is their way of calling "tattoos". They are essential from the beginning of the game to the very end; they are the symbols of a whole, representing the skills you have to gain in order to finish Far Cry 3.
