Amongst the various genres in the world of video gaming, shooter games are probably the most popular. It is a subgenre of action video games where the focus is almost entirely on the fights against enemies using various long-range weapons in the players' arsenal. In this article, Gurugamer is going to list the top 5 best single player shooter games in 2022.
1. DOOM Eternal
Doom Eternal is a masterpiece of gore and violence, a pure art form of killing demons in almost any way imaginable, it took what the first game had and cranked it all to the maximum.
The combat is faster, and even more brutal, with absolutely stunning glory kill animations that never get old. It makes you use every single gun and master them, the Arenas are made to test every ounce of your mastery, they are fun/beautifully designed, yet exceedingly challenging, every single game mechanic WILL by the end of the game be mastered (that's what it took me to beat nightmare difficulty).
On the other hand, DOOM Eternal is less about the classic FPS movement and more about resource management. Where 2016 gives you a bunch of firepowers and lets you use them as you see fit, Eternal gives you a bunch of tools and pushes you to use them in a specific way. When they said, "use the right tool for the job" they weren't kidding. You basically have to. Don't try to improvise. Make sure you take out the demons in the right order to keep your resources up, or you're going to die since item placement on the map is few and far between. It's all about chainsawing the right demon at the right time.
2. Borderlands 2
A mix of FPS and RPG, Borderlands 2 is a lot of fun to play. So many missions to complete, so many enemies to kill, so much loot to grab. You are given massive areas to explore all over the world of pandora filled with creatures, quests, secrets and homages to lots of popular cultures. Controls are responsive and intuitive and the game mechanics (even at higher difficulties) feel fair and well thought through. As you progress through the game you will earn XP and levels which allow you to customize your characters' skills giving a large variety of gameplay styles.
Graphics-wise, Borderlands 2 has a visual style all its own, it may not initially impress some used to a "next generation, high definition, ultra-realistic landscape", but it is nevertheless very appealing and detailed. Some of the landscapes and views around Pandora (the world in which the story takes place) are beautiful and each area has its own look and atmosphere. Characters and enemies are detailed and extremely varied in appearance. You can customize your character's appearance with a large selection of outfits and heads which you can collect throughout the game.
3. Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) contains some excellent games, some great games, and an okay game. All of these are high quality AAA experiences whose combined value far exceeds the price tag of the MCC by virtue of their quality storytelling, considerable replay value and enjoyable gameplay. Unfortunately, the MCC has suffered various networking issues since launch, which still come and go.
All titles featured in the MCC have been updated to use the same menus, settings, controls, and other features, in order to create a smooth, consistent experience.
Across the six entries contained in the MCC, various gameplay details and mechanics are added, changed and removed. Consistent across all entries, however, is the distinctive Halo gameplay feel, which can be described as somewhat old-fashioned, with many weapons fired only from the hip, no sprint function (in most titles), floaty gravity and no parkour/traversal system. It is, however, smooth, precise and enjoyable. Nothing else plays quite like Halo.
Featuring six games released between 2001-2012, the visual experience understandably varies, though the first and second games have been remastered (in 2011 and 2014, respectively) to bring them in line with later titles. All of the featured titles had impressive visuals at their time of release, and all can still deliver a beautiful view or breathtaking display of scale. Similar can be said of the audio design, barring, arguably, that of Halo 4.
4. Black Mesa
Black Mesa is a remake of the legendary FPS Half Life 1. Crowbar Collective took a very long time in rebuilding and improving the first chapter in Doctor Freeman's saga - and the result is extraordinary. In this game, players will step into the shoes of Gordon Freeman, assigned to work at the Black Mesa Facility as a researcher. A highly classified experiment goes wrong, tearing the very fabric of space and beginning a series of events with unimaginable consequences.
First of all the complete overhaul of every HL1 section is stunning: texture, lighting, physics, animations, everything improved by a magnitude. This is even more impressive considering they used Source 1 engine - pushed at its technical limits. The combat feels meaty and satisfying with very good feedback on hits, a well-done weapon feeling, smart enemy AI that actively dodges, uses cover and grenades.
Each level improves on the already great design of the original, with a myriad of secret areas and Easter eggs to find, some minor while others much greater. Exploration is rewarded constantly with additional resources and weapons. Enemy variety goes from classic headcrab zombies to military vehicles and plenty of exotic creatures from other dimensions - each with its own attack patterns and behaviors. Gameplay pacing is a masterpiece, as the alternation of puzzles, exploration and combat is done almost always in a flawless way.
5. Destiny 2
Destiny 2 is an action MMO set in a single, evolving world that you and your friends can join anywhere, anytime, absolutely free. It offers several great dungeons and raids as well as a superb PvP. The game itself is free, but contains many paid DLCs.
The gunplay is fantastic. Guns pack a proper punch. The handling feels solid, and there is nothing better than sniping another guardian in the head. The movement slightly differs from class to class but the mix of dodges and jumps provides more flexibility and a greater skill gap. There are certainly some balancing needed, however all in all I would say the gunplay is great.
The dungeons and raids are a great combination of puzzles, combat, parkour and boss fights. To finish a raid you pretty much have to have a mic and communicate with your team, but as long as your team consists of your friends its gonna be a great time. However, if your team is filled with randoms, prepare for a horrible time.
The uniqueness of exotic perks is truly where destiny shines. It can range from "Melee kills restore health for a short duration." to "Sliding reflects projectiles". These exotics can drastically change your playstyle and makes the replay value a whole lot better.
