Coming from publisher Hoodwinked Studios, Starlost is a bullet hell shooter that also integrates several elements of the RPG and Tower Defense genre into its gameplay. The game was originally released for Android to a pretty warm reception – attracting over 100,000 downloads on the platform – and it has now made its way over to iOS. Check out its trailer below:
As mentioned, Starlost is a hybrid of several different genres, with bullet hell shooter being the backbone. Playing from a top-down perspective, you’ll control your spacecraft to avoid incoming projectiles from the enemies while returning fire with your own arsenal of weapons. There’s a story mode, and then there are also endless and challenge modes to tackle.
It’s clear that Hoodwinked wanted to deliver something a bit more special than that, though, and so it has added an RPG aspect to its game. As you progress, you'll be able to unlock dozens of different weapons as well as special abilities, which will go a long way in helping you deal with the legions of enemies that will come at you from all directions.
These can range from the usual lasers guns to arcing electric weapons to powerful shock waves. Moreover, you can expand your fleet and recruit smaller ships to escort you into battle, providing extra firepower against tougher foes.
Starlost also offers more than 40 upgrades that you can make to your ship, which are presented in the form of a skill tree. It can be something as simple as adding a radar to better track the enemies, or it can be more interesting powers such as a short-range teleport. With this, you can customize the ship to suit your personal playstyle.
With the recent iOS release, Starlost is now available on both Google Play and the App Store. It is a free-to-play game with IAPs included.
