Solo developer Gionathan Pesaresi a.k.a. Neutronized is one whose work we’ve taken an interest in for quite a while now. Over the past few years, Pesaresi has released plenty of games in various styles, both with partners such as FDG Games or Nitrome and on his own, but he is probably best known for his excellent platformer series Super Cat Tales. In fact, he just pushed out Magic Bridge - a spinoff of Super Cat Tales – a few weeks ago, although you might not have even heard of it as it was a rather low-key launch.
Anyway, what we really want to introduce to you today is the next new game from Pesaresi. Titled Yokai Dungeon, it’s a cute action/puzzler that centers around Yōkai – a class of spirits or monsters in Japanese folklore. Controlling various characters from a top-down perspective kind of similar to Bomberman, you’ll play through a series of procedurally-generated dungeons and have to push objects into enemies to kill them. Pesaresi has given us tons of information in an extremely detailed developer diary video, you can check it out right below:
As you can see from the video, Yokai Dungeon has a lot more to offer than just solving the levels. As you progress, you might come across shops where you can obtain useful items that give you several bonuses such as a speed boost or an extra life.
The game also features over 20 playable heroes for you to choose from. Each of them has different health, speed, and luck stats, so each is different from the next. Another cool thing is that the developer has created these characters based on suggestions from fans, so there’s a possibility that we’ll see more coming in future updates.
There is no confirmed release date for Yokai Dungeon at the moment, but as stated in the video above, the game is “100% complete” and has been submitted to Apple, it’s probably just around the corner. Given Neutronized’s previous works, this game is definitely one that we’ll be keeping a close eye on, so stay tuned for more updates.
