Detention from RedCandleGames is one of those very few small-budget horror games I like and recommend to people - thanks in no small part for its incredible music. The game had an excellent performance when it first launched on Steam a couple of years ago, and it was ported to various consoles including the Switch just recently. Then, just a few days ago, out of nowhere, the developer announced and launched the game for Android and iOS. Check out its trailer below:
Detention takes on the setting of a fictitious 60s Taiwan. It also features lots of East Asian elements in the storyline and visuals. The gameplay, meanwhile, is a side-scrolling point-and-click adventure set in a 2D world
The game takes place during the 1949-1986 period - the 'White Terror' period of the country (see Wiki for more details on this). Our main character is a high school student named Fang Ray Shin, who was sleeping in the auditorium of the school, awakening as she was approached by Wei Chung Ting, a fellow student.
When Chung Ting said they were the only people left in the school as everyone has left to avoid an upcoming typhoon, the two started to find their way home, but the bridge was swept away by the flood, and the river turned blood red. The two decided to go back inside the school for shelter, and Ting went to look for a phone to call for help.
Later, Shin once again woke up in the auditorium only to find Ting's corpse hung upside down from the ceiling. Now alone, Shin began her journey to escape, avoiding vengeful ghosts and solving various puzzles in the progress, as her past tragedies gradually unfolded.
