Free Fire, being a free-to-play game, has a lot of "currency gate" that force players to spend diamonds to skip hours of grind. The skill system is probably the biggest example, with each level of ability upgrade costing loads of gold and fragments.
In the OB 27 update, Garena has finally decided to remove this extra gold cost. In this article, we would list out everything you need to know about this change.
1 - About the gold cost in the skill upgrade system
The gold cost has been part of the skill upgrade system ever since the beginning of Free Fire. The fact that players need both gold and fragments to upgrade a character makes the system super clunky. Even if you buy a new character, you have to spend a lot more to upgrade him to maximum potential.
With the continuous releases of various new characters in Free Fire, players just can't find the resources to upgrade, which in turn leads to no one buy the new characters. Because of this, Garena has decided to drop it altogether.

2 - How good is the change?
Previously, the gold cost for skill upgrade from level 2 to 8: 500, 1000, 2000, 4500, 8000, 12000, 16000. You need a whopping 44000 gold to level up a character to max, which leads to an unhealthy amount of grind.
Now, players will only need fragments for leveling up skills. From level 2 to 8, it would cost 100, 300, 500, 700, 1500, 2500, 4000 character fragments. The unused coins can be used to buy skill slots, buy new characters, spin in Gold Royale... and more.
