The Esports Awards 2020 honors the people and teams behind the world's eSports scene for their achievements. It has concluded today, marking a thriving year of mobile eSports. This new sector has been steadily growing for the past year and a half, despite the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Garena Free Fire was crowned the "Mobile Game of the Year".
To acknowledge the immense growth of mobile gaming, the Esports Awards has, for the first time, added the mobile category. Free Fire was developed by 111 Dots Studio and published by Garena, and it's the best Mobile Game of 2020. Consider its extreme popularity, this is indeed a well-deserved win.
According to Sensor Tower, the game amassed 225 million downloads just in the first three quarters of 2020. It seems like the world does not get enough of Free Fire's fast-paced gameplay and compatibility with low-end smartphones. The game was also the Best Popular Vote Game on Google Play in 2019.
Apart from Garena Free Fire, the other nominees are:
- PUBG Mobile
- Mobile Legends
- Call of Duty: Mobile
- Clash of Clans
- Brawl Stars
- Clash Royale
- Arena of Valor
It seems like the mobile Battle Royale genre has taken over the nominee list. Other BR games such as COD Mobile and PUBG Mobile also joined Free Fire. Interestingly, there has been an intense rivalry between Free Fire and PUBG Mobile over the years. They have been taking turns to break each other's records. But, the 2020's Esports Awards battle has gone the way of Garena Free Fire.
