Genshin Impact, the biggest open-world RPG on mobile, has a robust combat system... in which each and every playable character is the master of an element. By combining multiple elements together, you can create elemental reactions to damage your enemies and elemental resonance to buff yourself. You might even get various bonuses based on the elements of the characters in your party.

In this Genshin Impact Elemental Guide, we would list out everything you need to know about this game mechanic.

1 - Element Chart

Currently, there are 7 elements available in Genshin Impact... with more that can be added later. Each element stands for a nation in the game, which worships the god of their element... Each country has a leader called Archon who bestows elemental powers upon followers.

2 - Status Effects

Out of the 7 elements, 4 would apply a status effect upon attack hit.

  • Cryo: Applies a buff that slows the movement speed of enemies hit.
  • Electro: Spreads in water and applies Shock status, which open up more elemental combinations
  • Hydro: Applies Wet status, open up more elemental combinations
  • Pyro: Burns the target and deals damage over time.

3 - Elemental Reactions

This is the core mechanic behind combat in Genshin. When two elements collide with each other, it can result in an elemental reaction that can cause damage or apply various effects to the target.

Pyro

Genshin Impact Elemental Combos
Genshin Impact Elemental Combos
Pyro + HydroVaporize: Deals x1.5 Pyro DMG when a Pyro attack triggers the reaction.
Pyro + ElectroOverloaded: Deals AoE Pyro DMG and causes an explosion.
Pyro + DendroBurning: Deals Pyro DMG over time. The grass is considered a Dendro object and will spread the burn effect around the area.
Pyro + CryoMelt: Deals x2 Pyro DMG when a Pyro attack triggers the reaction.

Hydro

Genshin Impact Elemental Combos

Hydro + PyroVaporize: Deals x2 Hydro DMG when a Hydro attack triggers the reaction.
Hydro + CryoFrozen: Freezes the target. If the frozen target is hit by a Claymore, a Sword Plunge Attack, or Geo DMG (excluding Catalyst user's Plunge), it will cause Shattered. Shattering a frozen target will deal additional Physical damage.
Hydro + ElectroElectro-Charged: Deals Electro DMG over time until the effect wears off, every tick shocks and interrupts any action. It also creates a lightning bolt that jumps to one nearby Wet target, dealing Electro DMG.

Dendro

Not much interaction for Dendro yet - this element has not been released.

Genshin Impact Environmental Damage

Dendro + PyroBurning: Deals Pyro DMG over time. The grass is considered a Dendro object and will spread the burn effect around the area.

Electro

Genshin Impact Elemental Combos

Electro + PyroOverloaded: Deals AoE Pyro DMG and causes an explosion. The explosion is considered a Heavy Attack.
Electro + CryoSuperconduct: Deals AoE Cryo DMG and reduces the target's Physical DMG Resistance by -40% for 12 seconds. Each Superconduct reaction deals DMG to targets within its range once, meaning if there are 3 Superconduct reactions, given all 3 targets are within the reactions' AoE, each target will take DMG 3 times.
Electro + HydroElectro-Charged: Deals Electro DMG over time until the effect wears off, every tick shocks and interrupts any action. It also creates a lightning bolt that jumps to one nearby Wet target, dealing Electro DMG.

Anemo

Genshin Impact Elemental Combos

Anemo + Pyro/Hydro/Electro/CryoSwirl: Infuses an element and deals that elemental damage while spreading the effect to nearby enemies. It does not deal Anemo damage (as that elemental damage seen comes from the talent that is dealing the Anemo element). Only one element at a time can be infused with Anemo.

Cryo

Genshin Impact Elemental Combos

Cryo + HydroFrozen: Freezes the target. If the frozen target is hit by a Claymore, a Sword Plunge Attack, or Geo DMG (excluding Catalyst user's Plunge), it will cause Shattered. Shattering a frozen target will deal additional Physical damage.
Cryo + ElectroSuperconduct: Deals AoE Cryo DMG and reduces the target's Physical DMG Resistance by -40% for 12 seconds. Each Superconduct reaction deals DMG to targets within its range once, meaning if there are 3 Superconduct reactions, given all 3 targets are within the reactions' AoE, each target will take DMG 3 times.
Cryo + PyroMelt: Deals x1.5 Cryo DMG when a Cryo attack triggers the reaction.

Geo

Genshin Impact Elemental Mastery Build

Geo + Pyro/Hydro/Electro/CryoCrystallize: Absorbs the element and drops a crystal of that same element. The crystal will give an elemental shield. The shield absorbs all types of damage, but it protects more efficiently against the shield's element.

4 - Elemental Resonance

You would get bonus buffs if you have two or more characters of the same element in your party, except for Dendro. More reactions for this element might be released in the future.

2x GeoEnduring Rock: Increases resistance to interruption effects and increases attack damage by 15% when protected by a shield.
2x PyroFervent Flames: Increase your attack by 25% and reduce 40% duration of Cryo debuffs.
