The origin of Molotov cocktail
The origin of 'Molotov bomb' can date back to 1936 when Spain was in the grip of its Civil War and soldiers looked for a new type of bomb to improve their combat tactics in cities and metropolises. The first prototypes of Molotov were the self-made petrol bombs that not only disabled T26 tanks but also destroyed them and brought the Nationalists faction the final victory.

Why we call it ‘Molotov cocktail’?
It was not until 1939 when such petrol bombs got their own name. Amid the territorial dispute between Finland and the Soviet Union in 1939, the Finnish army chose to operate guerrilla warfare against the Soviets due to the power imbalance as compared to their enemies.
Vyacheslav Molotov, a leading figure in the Soviet government at that time, claimed in radio broadcasts that they were not bombing the country but “donating food to the starving Finns”. From then on, the Finns started to call the air bombs “Molotov bread baskets” and responded with “Molotov cocktails”, which were made out of petrol, ethanol, or other flammable liquid and were packed inside a glass bottle.
“Molotov cocktails” amazingly turned out to be an effective weapon to tackle Soviet tanks, and the Finnish army eventually mass-produced Molotov cocktails and equipped them with matches. Despite the fact that they lost the war in the end, but “Molotov cocktails” really, really cast a huge shadow over the Soviet army.
