The live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” is killing it at the box office, overtaking “A Minecraft Movie” to become the top-earning movie of 2025 worldwide.
‘Lilo & Stitch’ Highest Grossing Movie of 2025
Per Deadline’s latest figures, “Lilo & Stitch” has racked up $957.6 million globally, with $553.9 million coming from international markets. That’s enough to edge out Warner Bros and Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie,” which pulled in $954.9 million worldwide and $530.9 million internationally. That said, “A Minecraft Movie” still leads the U.S. domestic box office for 2025 with $423.9 million.
According to the report, “Lilo & Stitch” and “A Minecraft Movie” are the only two films to break $900 million globally in 2025 so far. At its current pace, “Lilo & Stitch” is on track to be the first film to hit a billion dollars this year.
Deadline points out that “Lilo & Stitch” is only in its sixth week since its May 23 premiere. The movie’s huge demand made 2025’s Memorial Day weekend the biggest ever for theaters. It also scored the second-biggest opening for a four-day holiday weekend, trailing only “Black Panther” from Presidents’ Day weekend in 2018.
Breaking down the international numbers, Deadline says “Lilo & Stitch” is among the top all-time earners in places like Brazil, Mexico, and the Latin America region overall.
Thanks in large part to this movie, Disney’s leading the domestic box office with a total of $1.1 billion in 2025.
Controversy?
The record-breaking run of “Lilo & Stitch” is even more notable given some controversy around the film. The remake tweaked the original animated story, cutting out Captain Gantu, dropping Pleakley’s drag scenes, and adding a surprising ending where (spoiler alert) Nani hands over custody of Lilo to David and Tūtū to pursue marine biology studies at the University of California.
Dean Fleischer Camp, the director of the live-action remake, has spoken about the changes. He said Captain Gantu “just didn’t fit well in live action” and stood by the decision to cut him. On the ending, he noted, “People do get left behind.”
