Square Enix is adding an optional auto-level feature to Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final chapter of the remake trilogy, after players complained that skipping side content in Rebirth left them underpowered for story fights.

What the new option actually does

Director Naoki Hamaguchi outlined the system in an IGN Japan interview at Tokyo Game Show 2026. At certain points in the campaign, if your party is below the recommended level for the next story section, the game will ask whether you want it raised automatically. You can refuse. Players who want to explore and level normally can ignore the prompt. Players who just want the plot can keep moving without grinding open-world chores.

Why Square Enix added it

Hamaguchi said the team heard from Rebirth fans who wanted a more linear, story-first run like Remake, then hit a wall because so much experience sat in side quests and mini-games. Revelation is expected to be even larger, with a typical completionist run running over 100 hours, so the studio is treating the boost as a quality-of-life option rather than a new difficulty mode. Endgame fights such as the Weapons may still demand extra work.

How fans are roasting it

That did not stop the jokes.

On X and in comment sections, fans framed the prompt as Square Enix admitting Rebirth got bloated. One common gag is that an open-world RPG now includes a button that says, in effect, please skip the open world. Others called it a level skip for people who do not want to play the game, or said it makes players lazy even while conceding it is optional. IGN noted a broader fight over whether the feature is hand-holdy. A widely shared post from artist TheCartelDel argued games used to teach patience and delayed gratification, and that this design designs away the need to persevere at all. Another user said recent Revelation news feels like the game is being built for people who do not like playing games.

Optional still means optional

Supporters answer that the feature is a prompt, not a mandate. If you never press yes, nothing changes. Story-first players who bounced off Rebirth’s last stretch of bosses finally get a path that does not punish them for ignoring Queen’s Blood, chocobo side hustles, and every map icon. Critics reply that if the main path needs a free level bump, the structure itself is the problem.

Both sides can be right at once. An optional boost does not erase combat or exploration for anyone who wants them. It does make the level curve look more like a suggestion than a rule. Revelation launches April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. Fans will keep roasting the prompt until they can click no in the actual game.
