Ghasts are one of the most annoying mobs in Minecraft. They are large white floating ghost-like hostile mobs in the Nether that shoots explosive fireballs at the player. In this article, Gurugamer.com is going to showcase how to make an automated ghast farm in Minecraft 1.18.

1. About Ghasts in Minecraft

Ghasts are probably one of the most annoying mobs you can find in the Nether. They can fly over terrains unhindered and shoot fireballs at players, dealing from 15 to 31 hearts worth of damage, depending on difficulty. These fireballs are particularly dangerous at close range.

They can also move through solid blocks, unlike most other mobs. However, a ghast requires a line of sight to the player before firing - this makes their ability to phase through walls useless if the player walls them up.

2. How to make an automated ghast farm in Minecraft 1.18

Ghasts drop ghast tears and gunpowder when killed. The former is crucial in brewing potions in Minecraft, while the latter is for crafting TNTs, fire charges and fireworks. A Ghast farm is the easiest way for players to effortlessly acquire a significant number of them.

While Ghast can spawn in various nether biomes like the basalt deltas, nether wastes, and soul sand valley biomes in any light level. However, players often pick soul sand valley, as it has a higher spawn rate.

Step 1: Prepare all needed items

  • 2 chests
  • 1 minecart with hoppers
  • 2 hoppers
  • 1 Redstone torch
  • 1 Redstone repeater
  • 1 Redstone comparator
  • 8 levers
  • 10 powered rails
  • 3 stacks of rails
  • 16 netherrack
  • 16 wither roses
  • 8 glow stones
  • 36 glass blocks
  • 14 stacks of blocks
  • 5 stacks of slabs

The required components are fairly simple - players only need some Redstone components, rails, chests, hoppers, and a few blocks. The only tricky items to get are the Wither roses - you must summon a Wither and let it kill a number of mobs to spawn enough roses.

Step 2: Locating a soul sand valley biome

Getting to a soul sand valley biome is a must. Players can either wander around or locate one using the /locatebiome minecraft:soul_sand_valley command. Users can press F3 to see the type of biome they are in, as well as their current coordinates.

Afterward, locate a lava lake in the biome and create a path to the middle of it. Remember to check if you are still in the soul sand biome or not. By building your farm in this location, you won't have to spawn proof too much with slabs.

Step 3: Building the main components of the farm

There are 3 main components that a Ghast farm needs to have:

  • A Ghast spawning area.
  • An observation platform for the player to go AFK on.
  • An automatic ghast killing system.

Ghast spawns when player AFK in the aforementioned biome in the Nether, and by spawn-proofing everything, players can ensure that they only spawn in a certain area. Wither roses are for killing the Ghasts.

Step 4: Create an automatic collection system

Players need to create a Minecart unloader system using Redstone and hoppers - this allows the resource to be automatically collected. This step can be skipped if you don't need too many resources and can loot manually.
