Halo fans are divided after a rumor claimed Activision’s next game will reboot the series and move on from Master Chief’s long-running story.

Activision Takes Over the Next Halo Game
Microsoft confirmed this week that Activision will develop the next mainline Halo title with a new purpose-built team, separate from Call of Duty. The shift followed large Xbox layoffs that cut 268 roles across Halo Studios and other groups. A smaller Halo Studios team will keep supporting games already in the market. Activision president Rob Kostich said the goal is to make “the greatest Halo game ever” while staying true to what fans love.
The Unconfirmed Reboot Claim
The reboot claim came from X account TechnicalHalo, who said the project is “a new chapter” and that existing “lore is not going to be continued.” Outlets covering the post have not independently confirmed it and have urged caution. Still, the idea spread quickly because recent Halo campaigns after the Bungie era left many players unsatisfied.
Fans Disagree on Master Chief’s Future
Some fans welcome a clean start. They argue Halo 5 and Halo Infinite never paid off, and that recasting Chief is inevitable as voice actor Steve Downes ages. A reboot, they say, would let new actors and characters take over without dragging along a story that stalled. Others want only a partial reset: keep the Bungie games canon, drop later 343 and Halo Studios lore, and begin a new era from there.
A third group does not want another Master Chief game at all. They prefer stories like Halo: Reach or Halo 3: ODST, built around new Spartans, ODSTs, or other corners of the universe. “Make it a Halo reboot and not a Master Chief reboot,” one player wrote.
Critics fear Activision will discard 25 years of lore and turn Halo into another live-service shooter. Microsoft has confirmed the studio change, not a reboot and not the removal of Master Chief. Until official story details arrive, the community remains split between protecting Chief and starting over.
