This vibrant yellow block adds both danger and spectacle to the game. Here is everything you need to know to find it, craft it, and put it to creative use.

What Is Potent Sulfur?

Potent sulfur is a solid block with a bright yellow appearance similar to other sulfur variants. It serves as a concentrated form of sulfur and reacts uniquely with water. When positioned correctly, it generates either a noxious gas effect or dramatic water eruptions. The block has a hardness of 1.5 and requires a pickaxe to mine. It is fully renewable and stacks up to 64.

How to Obtain Potent Sulfur

Natural Generation

Potent sulfur appears naturally in two locations:

  • Sulfur caves biome: Look for underground pools filled with yellow blocks. These biomes often border other cave types and can be found beneath mountains or plateaus.
  • Sulfur springs: These surface features generate in various Overworld biomes and contain potent sulfur blocks in shallow water.

Crafting Recipe

First, gather regular sulfur blocks by mining them in sulfur caves or springs. Then craft potent sulfur using nine sulfur blocks arranged in a 3x3 grid in the crafting table. This produces one potent sulfur block.

Using Potent Sulfur: Noxious Gas Effect

Place potent sulfur directly beneath one to four blocks of water source blocks. The block must sit no deeper than four blocks below the water surface.

This setup creates:

  • Rising bubble columns from the potent sulfur up to the surface.
  • A cloud of noxious yellow gas particles on the water’s surface.

Any player or mob standing in or near the affected water receives the Nausea effect. This makes it perfect for trap builds or atmospheric decoration.

Using Potent Sulfur: Creating Geysers

Basic Setup

  1. Place a magma block (for periodic eruptions) or a lava source block (for continuous eruptions).
  2. Place potent sulfur directly on top of it.
  3. Add one to four water source blocks on top of the potent sulfur.

Geyser Behavior

The geyser shoots a tall plume of water and steam particles upward. It launches any entities caught in the column high into the air. Geyser height equals five times the number of water blocks above the potent sulfur.

Periodic vs Continuous

  • Magma block underneath → Periodic geyser with cooldown.
  • Lava source underneath → Continuous eruption with no cooldown.

Tips and Creative Ideas

  • Use geysers for farms, launchers, and redstone contraptions.
  • Build traps by hiding potent sulfur under shallow water pools.
  • Create decorative sulfur-themed builds.
  • Always approach active geysers with caution.
  • Potent sulfur is fully renewable.
