There are a lot of utility items in Minecraft that players can use to make their base better or more realistic. Amongst them, the Bell is probably the most useful, as it allows you to interact with all villagers in the radius.
In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase everything you need to know about bells in Minecraft 1.19.
1. How to get bells in Minecraft
Spawn
Unlike other utility items, bells cannot be crafted. Instead, they generate naturally near the village center, in all village variants. Their location is designed as the "meeting point" in the village.
Bells do spawn in chests, however, the chance for them to appear is abysmally low, at only 1.5%. Furthermore, only one chest can spawn them, the Ruined portal chest. Therefore, the only reliable way to find bells is to find a village.
A bell can be mined by hand or with any tool, but using a pickaxe is the fastest.
Trading
Bells can be bought from villagers, but they are fairly expensive.
- In Bedrock Edition, apprentice-level armorer villagers have a 1⁄3 chance to sell a bell for 36 emeralds. Apprentice-level toolsmith villagers sell bells for 36 emeralds. Journeyman-level weaponsmith villagers sell bells for 36 emeralds.
- In Java Edition, apprentice-level armorer villagers have a 50% chance to sell a bell for 36 emeralds. Apprentice-level toolsmith and weaponsmith villagers always offer to sell a bell for 36 emeralds.
2. What are the uses for bells in Minecraft
Once a bell is used, it produces a sound as well as a "swaying" animation. Bells can be rung using a projectile, right clicking, redstone signal, or even dropping an item on it.
Village gathering site
By placing a bell near a claimed bed, players can create the gathering site of a village. The bell would be claimed and will emit green particles above it.
Bells can be rung only from certain angles; trying from an incorrect angle does not cause the bell to ring. They can be anchored to the side of blocks, ceilings, and floors. Also, if the player uses the bell while villagers are sleeping, all of the villagers wake up.
Call all villagers when a raid happens
When the bell is rung, villagers within a distance of 32 blocks run into their houses immediately. In Java Edition, when the first wave of a raid happen, at least one villager will run to the bell in the center of the village to ring it and warn others before going back to their house.
In Bedrock Edition, the village bell rings automatically at the start of a raid. If a player rings a bell, the villagers run to their houses even if there is no raid.
Furthermore, in Java Edition, if a bell is rung during a raid and there's a raid mob within the 32-block radius, a "Glowing" effect would be applied to all raid mobs within 48 blocks. This effect has fairly flashy particles and produces a resonating sound when the process is complete. Overall, this feature is probably useful for highlighting the hostile mobs for elimination.
