The decoration is probably the most time-consuming process in Minecraft, despite yielding pretty much nothing but aesthetic value. Putting up items is a great way to make your base look better, however, dropped items despawn after 5 minutes.

Item frame is the solution to this issue - they are entities that display the item or block that is inside it. By putting items inside item frames, players can show off their valuable/rare loot without them disappearing. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase how to make and use item frames in Minecraft 1.19.

Using item frames as decoration

1. How to get item frames in Minecraft

Item frames can be placed on the sides of cactus blocks, pressure plates, fences, trees, slabs, cobblestone walls, chests, doors, and all solid blocks.

Looting

Players can find item frames naturally spawn in End ships of the End dimension. They hold and display the Elytra, which is the biggest prize the End has to offer. Just break the item frame to get both items.

Minecraft Elytra on an Item Frame

As each End Ship has only 1 Elytra, you only get 1 item frame from looting.

Trading

An item frame can also be acquired by trading with an expert cartographer villager. However, the price is rather steep at 7 emeralds. This is still a pretty easy way to acquire frames fast if players need a lot of them.

Emerald can be acquired fairly easily by trading with other villagers.

Crafting

This is the easiest way to get item frames, as all the components are super easy to find. If players want to get lots of item frames, crafting is the way to go.

To craft one, just put one piece of leather in the middle cell of the crafting table's second row, then fill the rest of the slots with sticks.

  • Leather drops from quite a few mobs in the game. Players can kill cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas... to obtain leather. Each of these mobs has a fair chance to drop up to 2 leather upon death. Hoglins in the Nether is also a good source of Leather.
  • Sticks are one of the easiest items to craft in Minecraft. You just need to place two wooden planks vertically next to each other in the crafting area to turn them into sticks. Moreover, since each plank gives out two sticks, you only need 4 planks to get enough of them for an item frame.

Get leather from cow farms

If you are struggling with acquiring leather, creating a Minecraft cow farm might be a good idea.

A cow farm is a multipurpose farm that provides the player with an inexhaustible source of cooked steak and leather. The overall design of this farm is fairly simple - you only need a bucket of lava, a bucket of water, some building blocks like cobblestone, a few signs, a couple of hoppers, some soul sand, some glass, and a chest. You also need some wheat to feed and lure the cows as well.

2. How to make Glow Item Frame in Minecraft

As the name suggests, this variant of item frames has built-in glowing capabilities that highlight your framed items even in low or no-light areas. Players can acquire this by combining the glow ink sac from a Glow squid with a normal item frame on a crafting table.

About glow squids

Schools of 2 to 4 glow squid spawn in water in complete darkness in the Overworld anywhere below layer 30. The Glow Ink Sacs they drop can be one of the materials to make a Glow Item Frame. A Glow Item Frame also lets players show their favorite items and weapons in their house like common Frames. They will shine in the dark, looking much more appealing. It is also possible to use it on signs to make the text glow and slightly stand out.

Normal Squids are pretty much identical to their glowing variant - they only drop black ink, however. Their spawn level is also a bit different - normal squids spawn on Y-level 50 to 63.

They can't produce light.

How to farm squid in Minecraft

This design takes more time to be built but can achieve a very high ink rate.

  • First of all, you should clear as much water as possible out of the river or ocean biome within the render distance of the player.
  • You have to build a chamber between layers 46 and 62, and fill it with water so squid will spawn.
  • To make water push the squid to the bottom you have to place water sources only in the top layer, and also place solid column blocks, as water will only push if it has an adjacent solid block.
  • Underneath the spawning chamber will be a layer of signs that can be traversed by squid but not water.
  • Squid crossing the sign layer will land on a hopper platform, where squid will die either by fall damage or suffocation and will gather all the resulting ink and send it to chests.
