In Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight: Silksong, exploration and navigation are key. Maps are super useful for getting around, but they can be hard to track down. If you’re new to the Hollow Knight series, you might feel lost early on. No worries though, you can sort this out in the first hour or two of playing.

Finding the First Two Maps and the Compass

Your first stop is Bone Bottom, a cozy town with a bench to rest on. It’s a great landmark for the early game. Head right out of town into an area called The Marrow. Solve the puzzle with the singing bug at the gate, then go straight up and slightly right. You’ll reach a spot with chains, metal, and stone, where a singing voice guides you to an NPC named Shakra. She might look intimidating, but she’s friendly.

Shakra sells maps and a compass in exchange for Rosary Beads. Early in the game, you might not have many beads. A Frayed Rosary String in your inventory could help boost your count to afford a map, but you’ll likely need more beads for everything.

To gather more, head left from Shakra’s location. When you see greenery that reminds you of the Moss Grotto, you’re in the right spot. The enemies here are a bit tougher, but they drop beads, letting you stock up quickly.

Once you have enough beads, return to Shakra and buy both maps and the compass. The maps are helpful, but the compass shows your exact location on them, making it a must-have. Buying it isn’t enough though; you need to equip it at a bench, which you can’t do just anywhere.

Head back to Bone Bottom and use the bench there. Sit down, open your inventory, and equip the compass. From then on, you’ll see your position on the map. Just a heads-up: later in the game, you might need to swap the compass for other tools, so it’s not a permanent fixture.
