You might think the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update is only about making things easier, but get ready for the zombie version of the Nautilus mob. By itself, it's harmless, but when a Drowned is riding it, they'll come after you. Still, the Zombie Nautilus acts a lot like the regular one and you can tame and ride it too. So, if you spot a Zombie Nautilus in Minecraft, here's a straightforward method to tame and ride the thing.

Where to Find Zombie Nautilus in Minecraft
Unlike other neutral mobs in Minecraft, the Zombie Nautilus doesn't show up alone and depends on Drowned spawn rates. In any Ocean biome, if a Drowned appears with a Trident, there's a 50% chance it'll be mounted on a Zombie Nautilus.
While on the Zombie Nautilus, the Drowned fully controls this water-based mob. That turns the whole setup aggressive toward players. They'll charge at you quickly with dangerous trident strikes.
But once you take out the Drowned, the Zombie Nautilus goes neutral and won't attack unless you start something. Maybe the Chicken Jockey makes a comeback, but the Zombie Nautilus might be the next charming yet lethal feature in the Minecraft 2 movie.
How to Tame Zombie Nautilus in Minecraft
The starting point for taming a Zombie Nautilus is to beat the Drowned on top of it. After that, make sure you grab some pufferfish through fishing or by using a water bucket.
Then, follow these steps to tame a Zombie Nautilus:
- Equip the pufferfish in your hand and approach the Zombie Nautilus.
- Right-click on the mob, and black sparks will appear around it. That signals you should give it more pufferfish.
- After a few more fish, red hearts show up around it, and the thing is tamed.
How to Defeat a Drowned Riding a Zombie Nautilus

Taming a Zombie Nautilus is simple if you can handle the Drowned. These enemies come with tridents that can inflict heavy damage of 8-9 hearts. Here are some tips to take them down:
- Use a bow or crossbow with enchantments to strike the Drowned from a distance.
- If you're not on a regular Nautilus during the hunt for this jockey, drink a Water Breathing potion for a solid underwater fight.
- But if you are riding a Nautilus against the Drowned, go with the new Spear in Minecraft. That lets you combine the Nautilus dash with the Spear's Charge Attack to finish the Drowned without much trouble.
How to Ride a Zombie Nautilus in Minecraft
With a tamed Zombie Nautilus, you can easily check out underwater structures while riding it. You'll need a saddle and Nautilus armor for extra defense. Now, follow these steps to ride a Zombie Nautilus in Minecraft:
- Hold the saddle and right-click on the Zombie Nautilus.
- The mob equips the saddle, and you can mount it by right-clicking again.
- You'll control its movements using your direction keys.
Hold down the spacebar or jump key to build up the dash meter. Let go to surge forward in the direction you're looking.
You can equip the Zombie Nautilus with armor at any level. The basic is copper armor, and the top is Netherite armor for the best protection. All Zombie Nautiluses get hurt from sunlight when out of water on the surface. But with armor on, they won't burn during the day anymore.
That's the way to tame and ride a Zombie Nautilus in Minecraft. So, did you survive those Drowned on the quick-moving underwater mobs? Let us know in the comments.
