Some of the biggest hints about Grand Theft Auto 6 haven’t come from official reveals or leaks but from Rockstar Games' own career page. A sharp-eyed Reddit user spotted something interesting in Rockstar’s job listings that’s got fans buzzing about a possible new feature for GTA 6.
Rockstar is currently hiring a Mobile Engineer for their Online division, and people are pretty sure they know what this is about. The job listing mentions working on mobile platforms, including SDKs and build systems, which sounds a lot like what Rockstar’s done before.
Companion Apps and Gameplay Integration
Both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 had companion apps that made the games more immersive. GTA 5’s iFruit app let you mess with an iPhone-like interface to customize cars and play mini-games. Red Dead Redemption 2 went bigger with real-time maps and an in-game journal you could check on your phone.
From what we’ve seen in GTA 6 trailers, social media is going to be a huge part of the game. Characters like Real Dimez are shown making viral videos, and there’s a TikTok-style app in the game’s world. Picture pulling out your actual phone to browse that content while playing in Vice City.
Think about ordering a taxi through your phone that shows up in the game, buying properties or vehicles during your lunch break, or watching in-game viral videos on your commute that impact your reputation when you log back in. Red Dead Redemption 2 already let players buy stuff through a web catalog that showed up at the in-game post office, so GTA 6 could take this to another level, making your phone a constant link to Leonida’s criminal world.
With GTA 6 set to drop on May 26, 2026, Rockstar’s got under a year to get this app ready if it’s for launch. The good news is they’ve got a head start. Their existing APIs, SDKs, and mobile setup from past apps give them a solid base. Plus, Rockstar’s got the pull to speed through app store approvals and the budget to hire top-notch talent who can jump right in.
Grand Theft Auto has always poked fun at modern life, and what’s more modern than being glued to your phone? That said, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed anything. The job listing might just be for keeping old apps running or something totally different. But if the rumors are true, GTA 6 could change how we think about mixing console games with our phones.
