In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Nirnroot is a special plant you need for the "Seeking Your Roots" quest from Sinderion in Skingrad. It’s got a green glow, makes a weird chiming noise, and usually grows near water like rivers or lakes all over Cyrodiil. Unlike other plants, you always get a Nirnroot when you pick it, but it won’t grow back once you take it. Here’s a quick rundown on where to find them.

Nirnroot General Characteristics

Appearance: Bright green plant that chimes, usually by water.

Quest Requirement: You need to grab 10, then 20, 30, and finally 40 Nirnroots for Sinderion to whip up stronger Elixirs of Exploration.

Total Nirnroots: There are over 300 of these plants in Cyrodiil (just the main game, not counting Shivering Isles).

Key Nirnroot Locations

Nirnroots are all over Cyrodiil, but here are some solid spots to check out, sorted by area for easier hunting:

Imperial City Area (Lake Rumare and Nearby)

  • Lake Rumare: Tons of Nirnroots along the shore, especially northwest near Vilverin (a dungeon northeast of the Imperial City). Stick to the water’s edge.
  • City Isle: Look on the small islands in Lake Rumare and the shores by the Arcane University.
  • Weye: Southwest of the Imperial City, near the village, check the riverbank.

Skingrad Area

  • Southwest of Skingrad: Close to Sinderion’s cellar at the West Weald Inn, search the stream south of town for 1-2 Nirnroots.
  • Silorn (Ayleid ruin southeast of Skingrad): A few Nirnroots grow along the river nearby.

Cheydinhal Area

  • Blackwood Swamp: East of Cheydinhal, by the river and swampy spots, especially near Muck Valley Cavern.
  • Reedstand Cave: South of Cheydinhal, along the Corbolo River, you’ll find some Nirnroots near the cave entrance.

Bravil Area

  • Niben Bay: Plenty of Nirnroots along the shores, especially around Bawn (east of Bravil) and where the Panther River meets the bay.
  • Silverfish River: South of Bravil, walk the riverbanks to spot several Nirnroots.

  • Weatherleah: Southwest of Chorrol, look around the pond and stream.

Other Notable Spots

  • Shadeleaf Copse (west of Anvil): Guaranteed Nirnroot by a pond, great for early pickup.
  • Peryite’s Shrine (east of Bravil, along the Silverfish River): A few Nirnroots are nearby.
  • Fort Redman (northeast of Leyawiin): Multiple Nirnroots along the Lower Niben River.

Efficient Collection Tips

  • Stick to Water: Nirnroots are almost always by water—rivers, lakes, ponds, or coasts. Follow big rivers like the Panther, Corbolo, Silverfish, or Niben to find bunches.
  • Use a Nirnroot Map
  • Hunt at Night: The glow stands out better in dark areas at night.
  • Keep Track: Since Nirnroots don’t come back, note where you’ve picked them to avoid wasting time.
  • Fast Travel: Zip between cities like Bravil, Cheydinhal, or Anvil and check nearby water spots.
  • Don’t Eat Them: Using Nirnroot for alchemy practice is a waste since you need them for the quest. Their effects (Damage Health, Damage Fatigue) aren’t anything special.
