I. Who Is Caterpillar?
Genshin Impact players met Caterpillar in the Unfinished Comedy questline in Update 4.1. This NPC appeared in the form of a little boy with silver-colored hair. But his hands, forearms, feet, and shanks have mysterious black patterns. Most of the players may think that he is a normal human boy who was cursed to become a non-human form like Hilichurl.
In fact, Caterpillar is not that 'normal'. Though he appears in the form of a human boy, this character is already over 400 years old. He also had a long time imprisoned in Meropide and a long story with the Narzissenkreuz Ordo affiliation. Caterpillar also unveiled a lot of stories about the 'master' Narzissenkreuz.
II. How Was Caterpillar Born?
The Story of Caterpillar starts from the Narzissenkreuz Ordo affiliation founded by Rene and Jakob with the aim of saving Fontaine people from the disaster of ruin. After Rene's rebirth experiment failed, Jacob used Carter Scherbius' remains and Narzissenkreuz Ordo's opponents to continue the experiment.
He also succeeded in creating Caterpillar by combining the remains of Cater and Hilichurl. Caterpillar is a new creature granted wisdom and human language using the power of the Narzissenkreuz's Holy Blade. By granting Caterpillar the moniker 'Chrysalis of the Phantasmic Moth', Jacob expected hope this creature would become a real human one day.
After the battle inside Elynas, however, Rene fell into the Abyss, Jakob had to hide, the Narzissenkreuz Ordo disbanded, and Caterpillar was imprisoned in Meropide. After 400 years of living in the Fortress of Meropide, Caterpillar has not become a human form as Jacop's expectation.
In the past, Caterpillar found the path that the Oceanids traverse from the Hydro nation to Sumeru to visit the Hydro Archon Egeria. It uses its special power to appear in the dream of a painter named Julien to inform him about this path. That's why this painter appeared in the Farakhkert Garden and met the Traveler.
In the conversation with the Traveler, Caterpillar described himself as a 'monster in human skin'. Maybe, he could not become a 'real human' because he could not accept himself to become a human life. He is still finding the answer to the question that who he really is and where he came from.
III. What Is Narzissenkreuz?
After failing in a risky experiment, Rene lost his body. Jakob Ingold, his best friend, continued his experiment to complete what Rene was pursuing and experimenting with. After many failures, Jakob succeeded in creating a stable Hydro living form.
Moreover, he also found a way to keep Rene's soul in the Hydro human form he had just created by using the pocketwatch Alain had given him before. That form was called the 'Master', or Narzissenkreuz in Genshin Impact 4.2. Jakob removed the memory about failing experiments in the past, making him believe that he had succeeded right on the first step.
IV. What Happened To Narzissenkreuz?
With the help of the Traveler in the 'Unfinished Comedy' questline, Caterpillar can escape the Fortress of Meropide and return to the Narzissenkreuz Ordo's old headquarters. This creature discovered that the Doomsday Clock in the Ordo would tell the moment of the end of Fontaine according to the 'world formula' in the note of Rene.
But Jacob suddenly came back with a new plan to change the world and prevent the catastrophe in the foretelling. The Traveler, Caterpillar, Ann, and Seymour reforged the Holy Blade of Narzissenkreuz.
Then, Caterpillar and Seymour went to find and stop Jakob from implementing his plan while the Traveler and Ann dived into the Primordial Sea to see and convince the Master to give up his desire to change the 'world' in his mind.
They succeeded in preventing the last plan of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo and making the Master agree to return to the current Fontaine and see how the 'world' is now. The Story of Caterpillar temporarily ends after you complete the Unfinished Comedy questline. But we may see him again in other quests in the Land of Hydro.
