Despite its player count soaring past the combined totals of the Dark Souls trilogy on Steam, user reviews highlight several issues.
In just 30 minutes after its launch, Elden Ring: Nightreign has attracted over 250,000 concurrent players on Steam, exceeding a quarter of Elden Ring’s all-time peak of 953,000 and surpassing the combined peak player counts of Dark Souls 2, 3, and Remastered, which total around 225,000.

The multiplayer aspect of Nightreign likely contributes significantly to its high concurrent player numbers, as it encourages simultaneous play. However, despite receiving less favorable reviews than Elden Ring and featuring an unconventional genre blend that might initially alienate some fans, early Steam user reviews remain positive, though they highlight Nightreign’s distinct departure from its predecessor. With console launches still pending in parts of North America and a late release time, the game’s ultimate player base and performance will likely take a few days to fully assess.

Elden Ring: Nightreign's Steam reviews are among FromSoftware’s lowest in nearly 16 years, with a "Mostly Positive" rating of just 73%, making it the second-lowest scored title under the FromSoftware banner on Steam, surpassed only by Dark Souls 3’s Ashes of Ariandel DLC (59%) and the long-delisted 2009 game Ninja Blade (62%).
Despite its player count soaring past the combined totals of the Dark Souls trilogy on Steam, user reviews highlight several issues. Key complaints include the absence of duo co-op support—limiting players to solo or three-player modes, though FromSoftware hints at a possible future update for duos. Other grievances involve the lack of ultrawide monitor support, a 60fps cap deemed unacceptable by some in 2025, and subpar keyboard controls, though controller users can sidestep the latter. Additional negative feedback stems from personal distaste or hardware-specific problems.
