Potions are powerful consumables in Minecraft that players can use to gain various buffs and effects. To inflict the effects of the potion on other targets, however, players need to turn normal potions into Splash and Lingering variants. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase how to brew and use Splash and Lingering potions in Minecraft.

1. How to create Splash potions in Minecraft

To create a splash potion, players need to combine a regular potion with gunpowder on your brewing stand to give it explosive properties. Furthermore, it is possible to combine water bottles with gunpowder to create splash water which put out fires.

In Bedrock Edition, splash potions' effects have only three-fourths of the duration of the drinkable form. In Java Edition, splash and drinkable forms have the same duration.

How to use Splash potions?

Splash potions explode when thrown, applying status effects to nearby entities within an 8.25 x 8.25 x 4.25-block area centered on the impact spot. Below are the main uses for splash potions:

  • Players can harm undead mobs using splash potions of healing.
  • It is possible to cure a zombie villager of its zombification by throwing a splash potion of weakness at it, then feeding it a golden apple.
  • Splash water bottles can put out fires and will deal 1 point of damage to endermen and blazes.

How to get Gunpowder?

Players can create either a Ghast farm or a Creeper farm to get Gunpowder. This ingredient can only be found by killing mobs and looting chests.

2. How to create Lingering potions in Minecraft

Lingering potions are variants of splash potions that can be thrown to leave clouds with status effects that linger on the ground in an area. To create a lingering potion, players need to combine a splash potion with Dragon's breath. This is a very hard-to-find ingredient that can only be created by the Ender Dragon's attacks.

For effects with duration, the duration applied by the cloud is 1⁄4 that of the corresponding potion. For effects without duration such as healing or harming, the potency of the effect is 1⁄2 that of the corresponding potion.

How to use Lingering potions?

Lingering potions explode on impact to create a 3 block cloud that lasts 30 seconds. The cloud shrinks quicker if an entity enters the area. Below are the main uses for lingering potions:

  • Lingering potions of healing is much more powerful than their normal/splash counterpart. A single Lingering Potion of Healing II can heal 10 hearts.
  • Create tipped arrows with the same effect as the potion.
  • Inflict harmful status effects onto enemies such as slow or poisoned.

How to get Dragon's breath?

The dragon's breath can be obtained by scooping up the ender dragon's attack residue into an empty bottle by right clicking the pool with the bottle equipped. This means outside of the dangerous process of collecting the breath, players can farm it for as long as they want.
