There are a lot of ways for players to travel horizontally fast in Minecraft such as using a horse or minecart. However, the game doesn't really provide a way for players to travel vertically.
You can make an elevator in Minecraft using Red Stone but it going to be quite complicated. Instead, any player can easily make a water elevator to travel up and down in their building. In this article, we will show you how to make a water elevator in Minecraft.
How to make a water elevator in Minecraft with Soul Sand and Magma
Basically, this water elevator works by using the interaction of Soul Sand and Magma Block while underwater. Soul Sand releases bubble upward and push any entity up underwater while Magma pulls any entity down while underwater. The bubbles created by Soul Sand and Magma provide you with extra air to breathe. However, all the water blocks in your elevator need to be source blocks for this to work.
So you will be creating 2 elevators, one for going down using Magma and one for going up using Soul Sand.
You can also make a water elevator without using Soul Sand and Magma but it will be slower because you have to swim up. Also, there is a risk of running out of air.
Below is the step-by-step guide of how to make a water elevator in Minecraft with soul sand and magma.
Step 1: Gather required materials
Here is the list of materials you need to gather to make a water elevator in Minecraft:
- Glass: You need a number of Glass blocks equal to 8 times the height of your elevator.
- Water Bucket
- 2 Doors
- Kelp (optional)
- Soul Sand (for upward elevator)
- Magma Block (for downward elevator)
You need to determine the height of your elevator first to know how many glass blocks you will need. For example, if your elevator is 10 blocks in height then you need 40 glass blocks. Check our previous articles, if you want to know how to make glass in Minecraft.
You can make 2 doors easily with 6 wood blocks with the Crafting Table.
You can find Magma blocks in the bottom of ocean ravines and in underwater caverns and mine them using a Pickaxe. While you are looking for Magma, also find some Kelp (0ptional).
Soul Sand can only be found in the Nether. You need a Shovel to mine Soul Sand.
Step 2: Build 2 elevators
Build 4 columns of glass blocks columns surrounding an empty block. You can make it has as high as you want. On one of the columns, replace the bottom 2 glass blocks with a door. The door block the water from flowing out while you can still get in.
Step 3: Fill the elevators with water
Now, you need to fill the space between the glass columns with water. You need to make sure every water block in your elevator is a source block to make the elevator works. There are 2 ways to fill water into the elevators:
- Method 1: You can start from the top and use your Water Bucket to pour the water down. Place Kelp on every water block to make them a source block.
- Method 2: You can add water to each block from the bottom to the top.
Step 4: Finish the elevator
Replace the dirt block under a water elevator with a Soul Sand block to make it push you up. Replace the dirt block under a water elevator with a Magma block to make it push you up.
The bubbles in each elevator will tell you which one goes up and which one goes down, which is why we used glass blocks. You can also add signs to each elevator.
