The biome and the Warden were actually part of the Caves updates, but due to the sheer size of the update, it was delayed into 1.19. With the release of Minecraft 1.19 update and the debut of the Deep Dark, they are finally out of the way.

It is time to look ahead - in this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase everything available about Minecraft 1.20 so far, including expected release date and features.

1. Minecraft 1.20 release date

Here are the dates of the last five major updates of Minecraft: June 2022, November 2021, June 2021, June 2020, and December 2019. Since 2019, Mojang has been releasing two updates every year, with the only gap being the Pandemic in 2020. With the Wild 1.19 update being the first release this year, it is likely that the 1.20 update would come out on either November or December.

2. Minecraft 1.20 expected new features

Based on the recent developer editions, below are a few features you can expect to find in the next update for Minecraft:

Bundles

Mojang has mentioned bundles pretty frequently in the past few years. A bundle is a storage item that can be used for managing items inside the player's inventory and allows for combinations of multiple item types within single inventory slots.  They are supposed to be a new method of carrying items, allowing players to get an alternative to chests.

Unique villages

Apparently, all major biomes in Minecraft are supposed to have their own unique villages. However, they just spawn the same copy of the plain village. Similarly, the game has unique villagers for swamp and jungle biomes, but no villages spawn in either of them. Hopefully, Minecraft 1.20 can resolve this issue.

Archaeology system

This is another feature that was announced for the Caves and Cliffs update in Minecraft Live 2020. However, they were scrapped later without any available info.

Apparently, the system was going to add a new structure called excavation sites, where players can use brushes to dig and clean blocks to excavate items. Possible items found include Diamond Blocks, Emerald Blocks, and Ceramic Shards of any color. Ceramic shards, in turn, can be used to decorate clay pots which are cooking utensils.

New Dimension

The newly added Ancient City is pretty mysterious. Its main structure is a giant hollow window, similar to the existing portal to the nether. Fans speculate that it is actually a portal and the dimension beyond that is going to be the next update. To further solidify the theory, this portal-like structure is made up of reinforced deep slate blocks, which are not obtainable in survival mode, just like other portal blocks.

3. New Biomes in Minecraft 1.20 (Speculated)

Mojang has teased a lot of new and revamped biomes over the years, but for some reason, they have never reached the players. Hopefully, some of them might be part of the 1.20 update.

Desert Biome

Mojang held a biome vote back in 2018, where the community get to choose which biomes would get a revamp. Taiga won, but Mojang also assured that the rest of the losing biomes will be implemented at a later date. 4 years have passed since, and it might finally be time for the Desert biome to get overhauled.

Apparently, the new desert biome is supposed to get meerkats, palm trees, and oasis as a randomly spawned structure. More variants of cactuses might also be added.

Savanna Biome

This is another losing biome in the 2018 vote. If the devs decided to upgrade it in Minecraft 1.20, the revamped version would get Baobab trees, decomposing plants, termites, and even ostriches.

Badlands Biome

The badlands biome is the runner-up in the biome vote of 2019 where mountains won. As the other losing biome, the Mangrove Swamp, was added in 1.19, it is possible that a new Badlands would make its debut in 1.2o. Apparently, the new badlands biome is supposed to get tumbleweeds, new cactuses, and some loot stealing vultures.

Interestingly, the loot picking feature of the vultures is fairly similar to the Allay in Minecraft 1.19. However, unlike the Allay, those Vultures steal the items instead of giving them back to the player.

Birch Forest Biome

The Birch Forest was probably part of the plan for the Wild update, as during an announcement, developers teased a potential revamp for the birch forest in the form of concept art. This does not come to pass, however, as they later revealed that it is not going to be part of the update.

With the concept art gaining a lot of traction, it is expected that Minecraft 1.20 is going to include it. Birch forest contains new plants, taller trees, tree mushrooms, and even hollow wood.

4. New Mobs in Minecraft 1.20 (Speculated)

The new mobs are mostly revealed as part of the various biome votes - they are the main resident of those biomes. Here is the complete list of the mobs that might get added to the game in Minecraft 1.20:

  • Fireflies (announced with Wild Update)
  • Vultures (from Biome Vote 2019)
  • Meercats (from Biome Chooser 2018)
  • Ostriches (from Biome Chooser 2018)
  • Termites (from Biome Chooser 2018)

Looks like Fireflies were cut in the last minutes, as it was part of some builds for the Wild update.
